Job summary

Center for Family Life in Sunset Park is seeking a Civic Engagement Coordinator to strengthen resident participation and advocate for local priorities. You will bridge community experiences with organizational programs and public systems.

Responsibilities include organizing forums, collecting community input, and supporting engagement with government partners. Evening/weekend events and local travel are expected; bilingual skills are preferred.

SALARY/HOURLY RATE: $31.86 - $35.71/hour; Annualized salary: $58,000-$65,000, based on 35 hours/week work.

Center for Family Life in Sunset Park (CFL) (https://centerforfamilylife.org) is a nationally recognized social service organization. CFL's mission is to promote positive outcomes for children and adults in Sunset Park, Brooklyn by providing a comprehensive range of neighborhood-based family and social services.

POSITION SUMMARY/PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Civic Engagement Coordinator supports the organization's community engagement, civic participation, and advocacy efforts. Working closely with community residents, staff, community partners, and public institutions, the Coordinator helps identify community priorities, strengthen resident participation, support community-led initiatives, and create opportunities for residents to engage in issues that affect their families and neighborhoods.

The position serves as a bridge between community experiences, organizational programming, and public systems. A core focus of the role is ensuring that community members have access to information, opportunities to share their perspectives, and meaningful ways to participate in civic and public decision-making processes.

I. KEY RESPONSONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, but are not limited to:

• Build strong and trusting relationships with community members and support their active participation in civic engagement, advocacy, and community decision-making.
• Gather and elevate community feedback, concerns, and priorities, and use them to inform organizational programming, community engagement strategies, and advocacy initiatives.
• Organize and facilitate community meetings, listening sessions, workshops, forums, and public education activities that encourage dialogue, learning, and participation.
• Develop and implement civic engagement and advocacy initiatives based on identified community needs, interests, and priorities.
• Support community members in participating in public hearings, community meetings, and other civic engagement opportunities, and coordinate communication with government agencies, elected officials, community-based organizations, coalitions, and other external partners around community-identified priorities.
• Monitor and research relevant policy, legislative, regulatory, and budget developments, translate complex information into clear and accessible materials, and collaborate with internal program teams to connect emerging community concerns with broader civic engagement and advocacy efforts.

II. QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in Social Work, Public Policy, Public Administration, Community Organizing, Political Science, Urban Planning, or a related field, with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Policy, Political Science, Public Administration, Community Development, Urban Studies, Education, Sociology, or a related field, with a minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience in advocacy, community organizing, civic engagement, policy analysis, government relations, or a related area.
• Knowledge of issues affecting communities.
• Familiarity with local, city, and state government structures and public decision-making processes.
• Experience working with community-based organizations, coalitions, public agencies, or other community and civic partners.
• Strong written, verbal, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
• Experience organizing community events, trainings, workshops, forums, or public meetings.
• Ability to communicate complex information in a clear, accessible, and culturally responsive manner.
• Bilingual or multilingual proficiency preferred.
• Demonstrated commitment to community empowerment, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
• Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish or English and Chinese preferred.

III. RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS

• Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community members, program participants, colleagues, community partners, and public institutions.
• Serve as a bridge between community priorities, organizational goals, and public systems.
• Demonstrate respect for diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Foster mutually respectful partnerships with community members and families.
• Work collaboratively across departments and programs to support organizational goals and community-identified priorities.

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS

• Work is performed in both office and community-based settings.
• Regular local travel is required.
• Participation in evening and occasional weekend meetings, community events, hearings, and civic engagement activities may be required.
• Occasional travel outside the immediate service area may be necessary.
• Hybrid work arrangements may be available based on organizational needs.
