Job summary

The City of Greensboro, NC is seeking an innovative and strategic Engineering & Inspections Director to lead its Engineering & Inspections function and shape infrastructure, development, and the built environment for one of North Carolina's largest and fastest-evolving communities.

Reporting to the Assistant City Manager, this exempt role oversees more than 200 professional staff, a multi-million-dollar operating budget, and partners closely with the City Manager's Office, City Council, and

Qualifications

• Educational background meeting engineering degree requirements or equivalent with relevant construction/plan development training.
• Minimum 10 years of related experience in engineering, development review, or municipal services.
• ICC Building Code Official certification preferred.
• Professional Engineer registration preferred.

Responsibilities

• Plan, direct, manage, and oversee the Engineering & Inspections Department and its four divisions: Business & Technology, Facilities, Development Services, and Engineering.
• Meet with contractors, developers, engineers, architects, and utility representatives to ensure projects meet City guidelines.
• Visit construction sites to assess progress, problems, and quality of work.
• Develop and administer the Engineering & Inspections Department budget and monitor expenditures.
• Provide staff assistance to the Assistant City Manager; prepare staff reports and present to City Council on projects and activities.
• Oversee procurement of professional and construction services and manage external vendors.
• Support boards and commissions; participate in professional groups and stay informed on trends and innovations.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Environmental, Structural Engineering OR Bachelor's Degree supplemented by specialized training in Construction, Plan Development and Review

Tools

ICC Building Code Official certification preferred

Professional Engineer (PE) registration preferred
