Job summary

The City of Auburn is seeking a Prosecuting Attorney to handle prosecution of misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor crimes and infractions for the City of Auburn. The ideal candidate will analyze law, argue persuasively in court, and manage a busy caseload while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

A Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited school is required, and experience in criminal prosecution is preferred. The City offers a strong benefits package and a commitment to public service.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA)
  • Valid state driver's license without impending loss at time of appointment
  • Experience litigating criminal misdemeanor and traffic violation cases; Rule 9 prosecution experience and internships/externships preferred

Responsibilities

The City of Auburn is looking for a Prosecuting Attorney to add to our team! This position performs professional legal work with primary responsibility for prosecution of misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor crimes and infractions for the City of Auburn.

The Legal Department

The City Attorney's office represents the City in its day-to-day operations and provides legal advice to the Mayor, City Council, and Boards & Commissions that make up the municipal government of the City of Auburn. The team consists of three divisions: Civil, Prosecution, and the City Clerk's office.

Primary Duties

In this job, you will:

  • Appear at prosecution court proceedings including, but not limited to, arraignments, pre-trial hearings, motions, jury/bench trials, sentencings, review hearings, and contested infraction hearings.
  • Review cases for criminal charging, and ready charged cases for in-court prosecution by preparing necessary documents and contacting needed witnesses/victims and opposing counsel.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely speaking and writing to a variety of audiences in a professional manner; works courteously, cooperatively, effectively, and professionally with City Staff, the Police Department, the Courts and court staff, opposing attorneys, and the public in carrying out duties.
  • Organizes case information and maintains uniform case files; ensures proper discovery; interviews witnesses; analyzes evidence and the law; develops trial or motion strategies; performs legal research; prepares briefs; effectively and confidently presents the City's case and oral arguments in court; and performs appellate work as needed.
  • Manage criminal prosecution caseload, coordinating with the Police Department and Courts for effective and efficient case management.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association
Additional Requirements
  • Valid state driver's license without impending loss at time of appointment.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience litigating criminal misdemeanor cases and traffic violation cases, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in these areas, but not limited to, criminal prosecution experience, Rule 9 prosecution experience, and/or criminal prosecution internship or externship experience.

NOTE: Applicants must successfully complete fingerprinting, background check, and the CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) Security Certification Test to be allowed to view sensitive information and have unescorted access while at the Police Department (per Washington State Patrol ACCESS unit).
