Job summary

City of Abilene is seeking a City Engineer to lead the Public Works Department, overseeing citywide engineering activities and infrastructure projects. The role requires a civil engineering degree (ABET-accredited), 5+ years of progressive experience, and TX PE licensure or near-term eligibility.

Responsibilities include developing capital improvement plans, managing budgets and timelines, and acting as liaison to leadership and the public.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field (ABET-accredited).
• Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible engineering experience after registration.
• Experience in organizational management and budget oversight.
• Licensed Professional Engineer in TX or able to obtain within six months.
• Texas driver's license or ability to obtain within 90 days.
• Certified Floodplain Manager certification or ability to obtain within 12 months (City pays for classes).

The Public Works Department delivers and manages critical infrastructure systems and services essential to the City of Abilene. Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the City Engineer will:

• Serve as a liaison to City leadership, boards, and the public

Required qualifications for this position include:

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field (ABET-accredited)
• Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible engineering experience after registration
• Experience in organizational management and budget oversight
• Required certifications include:
  • Licensed Professional Engineer by the State of Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (or ability to obtain within six months)
  • A valid Texas driver's license (or the ability to obtain one within 90 days or a military waiver)
  • Certified Floodplain Manager certification (or the ability to obtain one within 12 months - The City will pay for any necessary classes!)

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

• Municipal City Engineer experience
• Experience in land development, drainage, and utility design
• Demonstrated leadership in public works operations

The salary range for this position is $150,000 - $185,000, DOE/DOQ.
