Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Pick up and deliver freight between Service Centers and customers, supporting the selling process.

Essential Functions

1. Operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles (and triples where applicable) and straight trucks.
2. Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment.
3. Hook and unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from tractors and trailers.
4. Handle freight using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
5. Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, and ropes.
6. Recoup or repair damaged freight as needed.
7. Complete required documentation and reports accurately.
8. Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures.
9. Collect freight charges and maintain related documentation.
10. Follow dispatch instructions and communicate delays, arrivals, and equipment issues.
11. Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business.
12. Provide excellent internal and external customer service.
13. Seek additional business opportunities from customers and relay leads to sales.
14. May be required to perform chaining of vehicle tires.
15. May perform duties of a road driver or dock employee when operationally necessary.
16. Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
17. Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

• Possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements. Automatic transmission restriction allowed.
• At least one year of recent experience or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course.
• Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) per hiring standards.
• Meet all DOT regulatory requirements under section 391 of FMCSA regulations.
• Ability to perform basic math and use a calculator.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lift/carry freight weighing up to 100 pounds multiple times a week.
• Ability to sit for extended periods, and perform physical activities like bending, twisting, and climbing.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete training.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions

• Drive in various weather conditions on all types of roads.
• Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, diesel fumes, and hazardous materials.
• Hours may vary based on operational needs.
• Hazardous Materials endorsement must be obtained within 120 days of employment.
