Job summary

City of Pierre Fire Department seeks an Accountant with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting who is detail oriented and motivated to contribute to the Finance Office. The Accountant provides support to the Finance Officer and Deputy in financial recording and reporting, receipting payments, and maintaining ledgers and accounts receivable.

The role may include assisting with annual processes, bank reconciliations, tax reporting, and customer service duties as needed.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of GAAP and GASB standards.
• Ability to reconcile and balance accounts.
• Understanding of cash management principles.
• Familiarity with city chart of accounts and fund structure.
• Knowledge of SD sales tax and business licensing policies.
• Proficient with accounting software and general computer skills.
• Strong customer service orientation and communication skills.
• Ability to gather and analyze financial data for reporting.
• Experience in preparing financial reports and journal entries.

Responsibilities

• Process accounts receivable payments and bank deposits; prepare vouchers and load transactions.
• Balance daily cash registers and perform remote and cash deposits; file receipts.
• Provide customer service; process utility payments and set up accounts.
• Prepare invoices and monthly statements; monitor aging and follow up on past due balances.
• Prepare monthly general ledger transactions and reconcile accounts; investigate variances.
• Schedule ACH debt and revenue payments; post monthly journal entries as needed.
• Maintain spreadsheets tracking revenues for funds and facility rentals.
• Process vendor payments and support related duties as assigned.
