Job Description: Construction Inspector
Under general supervision, the Construction Inspector inspects construction projects to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public by ensuring compliance with state, city, and local codes and specifications.
Note: Posted pay range is the starting salary. The pay rate offered is based on experience.
- Inspect capital roadway improvement projects, including new roadway sections, sub-grade preparation, base courses, curbing, and asphalt paving. Oversee density testing, concrete testing, and asphalt testing. Inspect all aspects of new bridge construction for quality control and testing.
- Inspect water mains, services, wastewater mains, services, and street construction. Perform field inspections of fire lines, fire hydrants, valves, manholes, cleanouts, storm sewer piping, inlets, reclaimed water mains, trench safety, traffic control, stormwater BMPs, verify quantities/pay estimates, and review right-of-way and street cut permits.
- Make field and plan changes; respond to citizen complaints; coordinate with contractors, other departments, civil engineers, franchise utilities, and permit offices.
- Maintain communication with contractors, citizens, engineers, and other departments via email and phone; assist with distributing door tags and flyers.
- Generate daily and weekly reports using software (e.g., CityWorks); create specialty reports, timesheets, water usage reports, and warranty reports.
- Review plans, specifications, as-builts for accuracy, and conduct submittal reviews in accordance with city details, ordinances, and specifications.
- Manage quality control by checking for ADA compliance, inspecting materials, water mains, services, fire lines, wastewater mains, manholes, mandrels, and reclaimed water systems. Collect bacteriological samples and conduct final walk-throughs and punchlists.
- Coordinate projects by organizing pre-construction, on-site, progress, review plan, pre-bid, and bid opening meetings, as well as training and informational conferences.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Minimum one year of experience in the construction field.
- Class C Driver's License.
Depending on the area of assignment:
- Water Distribution Class C license or the ability to obtain one within three years of employment.
