Job description

We’re a cannabis company that doesn’t really act like a cannabis company.

We operate more like a CPG brand house that happens to make cannabis products.

One of our brands is Gummy Demarco. Google him. He's a fun brand to work on.

Think less traditional weed marketing. More Liquid Death, Oatly, Old Spice, Dr. Squatch, Scrub Daddy and brands that understand personality is just as important as the product.

Our brands have voices. Characters. Opinions. Questionable levels of confidence.

Some are polished.

Some are ridiculous.

Some probably need supervision.

That’s where you come in.

We’re looking for a Cinematographer / Editor who can make things look expensive, weird, funny, beautiful, disgusting, cinematic, or occasionally all six at once.

This is not a job where someone hands you a storyboard, tells you exactly where to put the camera and stands behind you asking if you got the shot.

We need someone who can make the shot from an idea. Or come up with a better one.

You’ll work with a slightly unhinged group of creatives constantly making social content, product launches, ads, experiments, interviews, stupid little internet things and occasionally something that probably should have required a permit.

WHAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY DO

You’ll spend roughly two days a week shooting in our lab/studio in Hazel Park, turning products, people, processes, experiments and random creative ideas into content people want to watch.

The rest of the time you’ll be shooting, editing, experimenting, concepting and collaborating.

We take road trips.

Some days you’ll shoot beautiful macro product footage.

Some days someone will walk over and ask:

“Can we make this look like a 1987 pharmaceutical commercial?”

Your answer should ideally be:

Then you figure it out.

YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
  • Shooting and editing social-first content
  • Reels, TikToks, ads, launches and brand films
  • Cinematic product video and photography
  • Macro/product beauty shots
  • Lighting products, people and environments
  • Camera, gimbal, drone and audio operation
  • Editing, color, sound design and finishing
  • Creating interesting transitions and camera moves
  • Turning rough ideas into finished work
  • Making content quickly without turning everything into a three-week production
  • Collaborating with designers, writers and creative director
  • Building repeatable shooting setups in our lab
  • Organizing footage and taking care of the gear
  • Occasionally grabbing a camera because something ridiculous is happening and nobody planned for it
THE BIG THING

You need creative instincts. We don’t just want someone who knows Premiere shortcuts and which end of the camera points at the subject.

We want someone who sees a product sitting on a table and immediately thinks:

What if we shot through glass?

What if the camera was underneath it?

What if we blasted it with red light?

What happens at 120fps?

What if we made this look like a Tarantino movie for absolutely no reason?

That curiosity matters more to us than ten years of making perfectly acceptable corporate videos.

YOU SHOULD PROBABLY KNOW
  • Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve extremely well. (Capcut is also a good new tool to have)
  • BONUS: After Effects enough to be dangerous.
  • Camera operation, composition, exposure and lenses.
  • Studio and practical lighting.
  • Color grading and audio.
  • Gimbals and handheld shooting.
  • Social-first editing and pacing.
  • How to make something look great without needing 14 people standing around a monitor.
  • And increasingly, how to use AI and emerging creative tools without making everything look like AI made it.
YOU SHOULD PROBABLY BE
  • Creative
  • Fast
  • Curious
  • Self-directed
  • Collaborative
  • Resourceful
  • Comfortable occasionally failing
  • And comfortable hearing:
  • “This might be a terrible idea, but…”
PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF
  • You need every shot handed to you.
  • You require a 14-page creative brief before touching a camera.
  • You believe every video needs a drone shot.
  • You use the phrase “content deliverable ecosystem” in normal conversation.
  • You want to spend your career filming people shaking hands in conference rooms.
THE TOYS:

You’ll have access to an in-house starter production kit including:

  • Canon R8, Canon and Sigma lenses including macro, Hollyland wireless monitoring, OSEE production monitor, Rode and DJI wireless audio, RGB/LED lighting, motorized slider, grip equipment, C-stands, tripods, phone rigs and plenty of production accessories.

It’s a starter kit.

If you can make a case for another toy, we can grow it.

Basically, we bought the gear.

Now we need someone who wants to figure out what we can do with it.

Thank you so much. Exciting time at Detour and big things ahead.
