Job summary

The Chatterjee Laboratory at the University of Maryland, Baltimore seeks a highly motivated Laboratory Research Assistant to join an NIH-sponsored program investigating the mechanistic basis of antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and its role in bacterial pathogenesis.

You will perform routine lab maintenance and research activities, including ELISA assays, media preparation, DNA extractions, electrophoresis, and image capture, with opportunities to assist in study design and

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine lab maintenance and research activities (ELISA, media prep, buffers, DNA extractions).
  • May perform advanced laboratory research activities and assist in study design.
  • Compile and analyze research data using computer software.
  • Assist with literature reviews, editing, and preparing manuscripts and illustrations.
  • Provide training/guidance to students and laboratory staff; assist in developing procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Primary Duties:
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activitiessuch as: general housekeeping, wipe tests, ELISA assays, preparingsolutions, media, stains, and buffers; cultures and specimens;autoradiograms and photomicrographs, executing biochemicalprocedures such as: electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, andDNA extractions, etc.
  • May perform advanced laboratory research activities such as:animal surgery, microscopy techniques, imaging techniques,recombinant DNA techniques, protein purification, andhybridizations, etc. May participate in the design of researchstudies.
  • Compile and may analyze research data using various relevantcomputer software applications.
  • Assist with literature research, editing and preparingmanuscripts, scientific illustrations, and computer graphics forpublication.
  • Perform administrative duties such as: training and guidingstudents and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting indeveloping policies, procedures, and/or methods for laboratoryexperimentation; and ordering supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or fieldof study related to the research of the laboratory.

Other: May require training related to occupational safetyand health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardousmaterials and/or ionizing radiation.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional relatedexperience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance ofthe work of the job class may be substituted for the education orexperience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year ofrelated experience. In instances where specific education and/orexperience is required only directly related education and/orexperience may be substituted.

Hiring Range:

$49,000 - $55,000, Commensurate with educationand experience
