Job summary

Ascension Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks seeks a Director of Children’s Ministry to lead Sunday morning programs for birth through 5th grade and collaborate with the Associate Pastor to create a rich, worshipful experience for families.

This full-time, non-exempt role requires coordinating volunteers, planning curricula and events, ensuring child safety, and communicating weekly updates to families.

Qualifications

• Active, demonstrated faith and ability to articulate it.
• Background or degree in education, child development, or children's ministry preferred.
• Ability to articulate Lutheran theology.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while also being a team player.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate Sunday morning children's ministries year-round with staff and volunteers.
• Train and schedule nursery staff for all programs.
• Coordinate special children’s events, including evenings and weekends.
• Recruit and develop volunteers, ensuring Safe Church training compliance.
• Develop safety policies for children, staff, and volunteers.
• Send weekly updates to families and nurture relationships.
• Communicate children’s ministry via newsletter, social media, website, and slides.
• Track attendance and reach out to families who fall out of rhythm in connecting with the church.
• Coordinate ministry calendar with the church's vision and family programs.
• Manage the Children’s Ministry budget and related purchases.
• Engage Ascension Lutheran School students and lead faith formation.
• Weekly visits to ECC for family engagement and classroom projects.
• Plan and coordinate summer programming with staff and volunteers.
