Job summary

The Maryland School for the Blind is seeking a dedicated instructional support professional to work with students aged 3 to 21 with vision loss and additional needs. Under BCBA guidance, you will help implement BIPs and instructional interventions in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

You will collect and track data, support daily living skills, and adapt your teaching to students’ sensory needs using AAC devices and technology. A high school diploma is required.

Qualifications

• Requires minimum high school diploma; Associate degree or higher preferred.
• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must complete 40 in-person training hours to be held Aug 2023; competencies evaluated annually.
• Must demonstrate competency in computers, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite.
• Experience with students with visual impairment and multiple disabilities preferred.

Description

SUMMARY: Under the direction of program leadership, with direction from the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), supports students and staff and helps facilitate and support individual Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), instructional interventions, and Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs).

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Essential Functions:

1. Implements and supports instructional components based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

2. Utilizes data collection procedures and assists with protocols for data analysis.

3. Provides instructional and behavioral support to students.

4. Follows established evidence based instructional support and adheres to the terms of the BIP as outlined by the BCBA.

5. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to prepare instructional and behavioral support materials for students.

6. Collects student-specific data and provides support to others to assist in tracking student progress and maintaining data; this may include entering data into graphing tools and updating graphs.

7. Conducts necessary informal assessments (e.g., preference assessments).

8. Attends and presents data at relevant meetings and routinely communicates across shifts.

9. Assists with physical behavior management as needed.

10. Instructs in the area of daily living skills (to include toileting and other hygiene routines) and leisure.

11. Assists students with travel skills and concept development.

12. Attends to the students’ sensory needs and modifies one’s own behavior and the environment as needed.

13. Utilizes augmentative communication devices and schedule systems.

14. Uses and assists students with use of computers, iPads, and other forms of technology.

15. Works with medically/developmentally/uniquely complex students from ages 3 to 21, with a spectrum of vision loss and additional needs.

Marginal Functions:

1. Performs additional duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS:

Equipment Used: Computer/laptop, copy machine, printer, walkie-talkies, instructional and therapeutic material and equipment, adaptive and orthopedic equipment, stopwatch/timers, telephone.

Performance Standard: Must consistently demonstrate competence in all areas of performance set forth by program directors/supervisors.

Work Environment: Multiple indoor and outdoor environments around and off campus, with varying sound, lighting and temperature conditions.

Work Schedule: 37.5 or 40 afternoon/evening hours, Monday through Friday, flextime within the work week is occasionally required, and additional work hours are infrequently assigned. This position follows a 10 or 11-month school schedule.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, skills and general abilities:

1. Requires a minimum of a high school diploma. An Associate Degree or higher preferred.

2. Must be at least 21 years of age.

3. Must complete all relevant specialized training programs, beginning with 40 in-person training hours to be held in August 2023. Staff will be evaluated against an established list of competencies on an annual basis.

4. Must demonstrate competency in relevant areas.

5. Must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of computers, Microsoft office, and Google Suite.

After the six months in this position, the employee will have:

1. General knowledge of: visual impairment/blindness relative to testing and social-emotional development; behavioral management techniques used with students with multiple disabilities; IDEA regulations and service implications; MSB policies and procedures.

2. Basic knowledge of MSDE regulations regarding the provision of psychological services.

3. CPR/First Aid Certification.

4. Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Training completed.
