Job summary

The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) seeks a Social Service Specialist 1 for the Ontario Child Welfare office. This role focuses on responding to referrals, evaluating child safety, and coordinating services with families in a high‑stakes environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or in progress required; education must be completed.
• A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
• Strong assessment, interviewing, and reporting skills are essential.
• Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Responsibilities

• Respond to referrals and determine if child abuse or neglect occurred.
• Gather information via interviews with parents and children.
• Observe and analyze safety of home environments.
• Collect collateral information from school personnel, doctors, and law enforcement.
• Fulfill documentation requirements and enter data into databases.
• Arrange medical evaluations and substitute care placements for children.
• Present and testify in court.
