The Alabama State Department of Education invites applications for a school nutrition support role at the local school level. You will assist in preparing and serving meals, perform storage and sanitation tasks, and rotate through different CNP activities to support breakfast and lunch programs.

  • Work in rotation across CNP activities including cashier, server, and dish machine operations.
  • Maintain professional dress and hygiene suitable for food service.
  • Follow safety precautions and cooperate with school staff to uphold program standards.
  • Maintain records and reports accurately and promptly.

179-day position paid following the board-approved salary schedule

JOB GOAL:

Assist the food service program at the school level efficiently and effectively to meet nutritional needs and program acceptability of students and staff following federal, state, and local regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Ability to operate and maintain kitchen equipment necessary for job responsibilities.
  • Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow Nutrition Program guidelines and regulations.
  • Ability to use technology as required to perform job responsibilities.
  • Strength, stamina, agility, dexterity, and acuity to perform job responsibilities safely and effectively.
  • Ability, agility, and stamina to engage in prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, turning, reaching, and repetitive lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternative qualifications to those listed as the Board may require.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists in preparing and serving food according to the written menu for the day and the supervisor’s/manager’s instructions.
  • Performs food storage, inventory control, equipment cleaning, assembly, disassembly, and related serving and sanitation tasks as assigned.
  • Performs duties courteously and professionally.
  • Operates food service equipment following established procedures.
  • Serves in job rotation or assists in any CNP activities as assigned, including cashier, server, backup, dish machine operator, food preparation, and cleanup of the kitchen, dining area, storage areas, or work area.
  • Maintains professional dress and hygiene, suitable for food service work (uniform, hair net/hat, closed--toe shoe with non--skid sole, etc.).
  • Observes proper safety precautions in the kitchen and other work areas.
  • Cooperates with other school system staff members to maintain high standards in the child nutrition program.
  • Follows written and verbal instructions and communicates effectively with others (CNP staff, vendors, school staff, students, parents, community members).
  • Participates in and promotes in-service training, conferences, and continuing educational programs for self-improvement and other personnel.
  • Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective work habits.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns, and complaints promptly and positively.
  • Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence promptly and accurately.
  • Properly uses and cares for the school system's tools, equipment, and material resources.
  • Serves on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
  • Uses effective collaboration skills to work as an effective team member.
  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Reports absences and takes leave following Board policies and procedures.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Medium Work:Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force regularly.

The performance of this job will be evaluated according to the provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Pike Road Board of Education policy on the evaluation of classified personnel.
