Job summary

Vance-Granville Community College seeks a Child Care Specialist Assistant to support daily care and teaching for one- and two-year-olds. You report to the Child Care Manager and the Director, providing warm one-on-one attention, assisting with feeding, diapering, and developmentally appropriate activities in a hands-on classroom.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.
  • North Carolina Child Care Credential or ≥12 semester hours in Early Childhood Education.
  • Willing to submit to local, state, and federal background checks; health statement; TB test; CPR/First Aid within 90 days.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure well-being of all children in the toddler classroom; assist with routines and housekeeping.
  • Provide warm, one-on-one attention to toddlers in self-feeding and self-help.
  • Lead age-appropriate activities when the teacher is busy or absent.
  • Support diapering/toilet learning and respond to health/ sanitation procedures.
  • Relieve teachers daily to provide staff breaks.
  • Arrange the classroom for quiet play, meals, and naps; manage cribs/cots.
  • Maintain child files, conduct observations, and document attendance and meds.
  • Communicate with parents about issues; participate in staff meetings and training.

The Child Care Specialist Assistant supports the daily care and teaching activities of the children assigned to their classroom and reports to the Child Care Manager and the Director of the Child Care Center. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with one- and two-year-olds — an age group that thrives on consistent routines, hands-on sensory play, and lots of one-on-one attention — and who is comfortable with the physical, hands-on nature of caring for toddlers (diapering, feeding, and frequent lifting).

This is a fully onsite position based at VGCC's Main Campus in Henderson, NC.

  • Responsible for the well-being of all children in the toddler classroom; assist the lead teacher/specialist with everyday housekeeping routines such as cleaning tables, sweeping, sanitizing toys, etc. to keep the classroom in order.
  • Provide warm, one‑on‑one attention to toddlers as they build independent skills such as self‑feeding, cup drinking, and early self‑help routines.
  • Take charge of individuals and small groups; lead age‑appropriate activities such as reading board books, storytelling, singing songs, sensory play, and simple movement games when the teacher is occupied with other duties or absent from the room.
  • Support diapering and/or toilet‑learning routines, and assist children requiring first aid or a change of soiled clothing during the day, following classroom health and sanitation procedures.
  • Relieve classroom teachers as needed on a daily basis to provide staff breaks.
  • Assist in arranging the classroom that is appropriate for quiet play, meals, and naps, including setting up and breaking down cribs/cots as needed.
  • Administrate achievement instruments on children.
  • Maintain files on each child including achievement profiles, teacher observations, examples of classroom work and attendance and medication records.
  • Arrange and decorate the classroom in a pleasing and developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Maintain classroom equipment and supplies; keep the classroom clean and sanitary. Perform light housekeeping chores as needed, such as sweeping floors, vacuuming rugs, cleaning and disinfecting tables, countertops, and other equipment.
  • Utilize appropriate discipline techniques, and responsible for communicating with parents any problems or concerns.
  • Participate in professional development workshops, seminars, and meetings to keep updated on education theories and practices. Comply with the State Day Care Office’s minimum requirements for ongoing staff training.
  • Plan and participate in any annual “special” programs or activities the Center might plan, i.e., Christmas Program, Graduation Exercises, Art Show, Halloween Carnival, etc.
  • Notify the Center Manager of any equipment and/or maintenance needs.
  • Perform emergency duties as needed, such as cooking, cleaning, providing transportation, substituting in other classrooms, filling in on other shifts, etc.;.
  • Participate in routine staff meetings.
  • Participate in Center planning.
  • Perform related duties as required by Center Manager.
  • Ensure the health and safety of each child in their care, including close, active supervision at all times
  • Develop positive relationships with colleagues through professional and respectful communication and collaboration. Proactively work to resolve issues and concerns. Assume a fair share of responsibility in the classroom.
Education and Experience Required
  • Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field, or hold an Associates Degree and the North Carolina Child Care Credential, or at least 12 semester hours in Early Childhood Education;
  • Must be willing to submit to local, state, and federal criminal background checks
  • Must submit a signed health statement at the time of employment
  • Must submit evidence of a T.B. test at time of employment. Cannot be more than 12 months old.
  • Must have be willing to obtain CPR/ First Aid certification with in 90 days of employment.
  • Documentation of health and safety training within 6 weeks of employment
  • This individual must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must provide a signed health statement and T.B. test results at the time of employment
  • Each employee, including the director, shall also annually submit a medical statement from a licensed physician or authorized health professional as defined in(a) of this Rule, or must complete a health questionnaire giving information about the status of his/her health on a form provided by the Division.
  • The Division, or the director of the child care center, may request another evaluation of an employee's emotional and physical fitness to care for children when there is reason to believe that there has been deterioration in the person's emotional or physical fitness to care for children.
  • Must be physically able to stand for long periods of time and pick up children for diaper changing or emergency purposes.
  • Maintain mental and physical alertness and an appropriate level of energy to perform essential job requirements. Respond immediately and appropriately to multiple or unexpected situations or emergencies.
  • Demonstrate full range of motion to lift, reach, squat, climb, sit, and otherwise fully participate in activities.
  • Frequently lift, move, or hold children with a range of weight from 10 to 40 pounds. Occasionally lift, move, or hold weight more than 40 pounds
  • The Division, or the director of the child care center, may request an evaluation of a staff member's emotional and physical fitness to care for children when there is reason to believe that there has been deterioration in the staff member's emotional and physical fitness to care for children. This request may be based upon factors such as observations by the director or center staff, reports of concern from family, reports from law enforcement, or reports from medical personnel.
Education and Experience Preferred
  • Two years of experience in an early childhood setting preferred.
