Job summary

The City of Durango invites applications for a Child Care Attendant to supervise children up to age 8 in the Recreation Center’s Babysitting Room. You will plan and lead crafts and activities, and ensure a safe, welcoming space while children are in the care of Parks and Recreation staff.

Ideal candidates have education or training with children, childcare experience, and the ability to obtain CPR/First Aid/AED certification.

Qualifications

  • Education or training in working with children.
  • Experience in childcare, school, camp, or similar setting preferred.
  • Ability to obtain CPR, first aid, and AED certification.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise children up to age 8 continuously while in the Babysitting Room.
  • Develop and lead fun, age-appropriate crafts and activities.
  • Communicate clear expectations and directions to children and Babysitting Room users.
  • Monitor children and activities to maintain a safe environment.
  • Keep the Babysitting Room organized, clean, and tidy.
  • Verify payment or membership access for Babysitting Room users.
  • Ensure children are released only to authorized individuals.
  • Maintain Babysitting Room records and paperwork.
  • Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Arrive on time and prepared for shifts.
  • Follow department policies and represent the City professionally.

Join the City of Durango Parks and Recreation team as a Child Care Attendant in the Recreation Center’s Babysitting Room. You’ll supervise children up to age 8, develop and lead crafts and activities, and create a safe, welcoming environment while they are in the care of Parks and Recreation staff. This position is a great fit for someone who enjoys working with children, takes initiative in planning activities, and can confidently manage a variety of behaviors while keeping the space organized and engaging.

What You’ll Do in This Role:
  • Supervise children up to age 8 continuously while they are in the Babysitting Room

You Have:
  • Education or training in working with children through recreation, education, scouting, 4-H, or a related setting
  • Experience in a childcare, school, camp, or similar setting is preferred
  • Ability to obtain CPR, first aid, and automated external defibrillator (AED) certification

  • Communicate clearly and work effectively with children, families, and coworkers
  • Stay attentive and engaged while supervising children and responding to their needs
  • Use good judgment when managing different behaviors, activities, and situations
