Job summary

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County seeks a Chief Medical Officer to lead the veterinary team, oversee medical care for shelter animals and public patients, and ensure compassionate, high-quality service. Responsibilities include overseeing anesthesia, surgery, disease prevention, budget development with the CFO, and staying current with shelter medicine practices.

Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent with PA licensure or ability to obtain.
• Strong leadership and veterinary management experience.
• Experience in shelter medicine and herd health.
• Ability to develop medical programs and budgets.
• Excellent communication and mentorship skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and direction for daily medical and surgical care of animals in shelter and clinic.
• Oversee anesthesia, surgery, and chronic disease management; ensure high-quality patient care.
• Develop and implement disease prevention and vaccination programs.
• Manage budgets with CFO and create/update medical protocols.
• Mentor staff, supervise veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
• Represent ARL in conferences and donor engagements; collaborate across departments.
