Job summary

Bernalillo County seeks a Director of Strategic Communications to lead a team of communications professionals in support of the County Manager, County Commissioners, and staff. The role emphasizes mentorship, multi-channel strategies, and aligning messaging with the County brand.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Organizational Development, Business Administration, Business Management, or a related field.
• Eleven (11) years of work experience in communications, public relations, media, journalism, community engagement, digital strategy, or public affairs.
• Three (3) years in a managerial role.

Responsibilities

• Manage and mentor a team of communications professionals and foster a collaborative, high-performing environment.
• Create and implement multi-channel communication plans to advance organizational goals.
• Oversee strategic communications plans with measurable outcomes and direct content creation.
• Cultivate relationships with journalists and secure earned media coverage.
• Serve as a primary spokesperson and manage emergency communications to mitigate reputational risk.
