Job summary

AAAS, a leading science organization headquartered in Washington, DC, is seeking a Chief Government Affairs Officer to guide its government affairs and advocacy strategy. You will lead a team of professionals, build relationships with policymakers, and coordinate across AAAS units to advance science-based policy at the federal, state, and local levels.

The role reports to the COO and sits on the leadership teams guiding AAAS policy and public affairs, driving strategic direction and external

Qualifications

• Significant experience (at least 15 years) in government affairs, advocacy, strategic communications, public policy, or a closely related field.
• At least 5 years of relevant senior leadership experience.
• Deep understanding of the federal policymaking process and the political environment in Washington, DC.
• Strong understanding of science, technology, research, higher education, or related policy environments.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for AAAS’ government affairs, public policy, and advocacy initiatives.
• Lead a team of government affairs professionals and coordinate with CIO, CEO and senior leadership.
• Develop and implement an integrated government affairs strategy aligned with AAAS goals.
• Oversee federal and state/local engagement with policymakers, agencies, and stakeholders.
• Coordinate efforts with communications, R&D budget/policy, and external coalitions.
• Mentor and manage staff, budgets, and programs within the Government Affairs function.
