Job summary

JW Michaels & Co. is hiring its first dedicated Chief Privacy Officer and Senior Managing Counsel to lead the privacy program from the Legal department in a hybrid role based in New York.

The role reports to the Deputy General Counsel and collaborates with Information Security and technology teams. The ideal candidate has a J.D., active bar admission, 8+ years of blended law firm and in-house experience, and a proven track record in building or running privacy programs, including data mapping

• J.D. degree with active bar admission required.
• 8+ years of legal experience blending law firms and in-house work.
• Experience building or running a privacy program including data mapping and classification.

Responsibilities

• Build and run the privacy program end to end: policy, data mapping, data classification, and training.
• Partner with Information Security and technology stakeholders on program infrastructure and tooling.
• Advise on AI governance and policy as firm leadership pushes a broader AI adoption mandate.
• Manage privacy compliance across a multi-jurisdictional footprint spanning Canada, the US, LatAm, the UK, the EU, and APAC.
• Educate senior leadership and business stakeholders on privacy, information security, and PII fundamentals.
• Manage outside counsel relationships on privacy matters.

JW Michaels & Co. is engaged with a major financial services platform to hire its first dedicated Chief Privacy Officer and Senior Managing Counsel. The role sits in Legal and reports to the Deputy General Counsel.

What You’ll Own

• Build and run the privacy program end to end: policy, data mapping, data classification, and training
• Partner with Information Security and technology stakeholders on program infrastructure and tooling
• Advise on AI governance and policy as firm leadership pushes a broader AI adoption mandate

What We’re Looking For

Required Profile Criteria

• J.D. and active bar admission
• 8+ years of total legal experience blending law firm and in-house work
• Demonstrated experience building or running all or part of a privacy program, including data mapping and classification
• Hands-on AI governance and workflow implementation experience, not policy drafting alone
• Track record driving behavioral change and implementing technology in support of a program
• International privacy exposure across Canada, Mexico, the UK, the EU, APAC

Strongly Preferred Criteria

• 3+ years of BigLaw training
• Financial services industry experience
• Institutional asset management experience; investment management, banking, fintech, payments, and insurance also relevant
