The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) operates and maintains San Francisco's wastewater treatment facilities to protect public health and the environment across eight urban watersheds. We manage multiple treatment plants, pump stations, and discharge structures, serving over 2.7 million residents in the Bay Area.
The Chief Plant Operator (CPO) oversees complex wastewater treatment facilities, ensuring compliance with environmental permits, certifying reports, and managing operational staff. Responsibilities include supervising operations, managing projects, developing procedures, participating in budgeting, and regulatory reporting. The role requires working in environments with potential hazards, including exposure to sewage and chemicals, and may involve overtime, nights, weekends, or on-call duties.
Additional professional experience may substitute for educational requirements on a year-for-year basis. Verification of experience and education may be required during the process.
Qualified candidates will complete a supplemental questionnaire and a Management Test Battery assessing relevant competencies. Scores are valid for three years and may be used for future recruitments. The process may include additional position-specific assessments.
