Role Overview

The Wastewater Enterprise manages San Francisco's sewer system and operates multiple treatment facilities. The Chief Plant Operator (CPO) oversees complex treatment plant operations, ensuring compliance with environmental permits and regulations, and acts as the Legally Responsible Official (LRO).

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and evaluate wastewater system operations and maintenance.
• Manage staff performance and coordinate with other divisions.
• Lead research projects and review engineering plans.
• Develop operational procedures and monitor system performance.
• Prepare budgets and regulatory reports.
• Coordinate with stakeholders and represent the department in meetings.
• Perform duties as a certified Chief Plant Operator per California regulations.

Work Environment

The role involves exposure to raw sewage, chemicals, and potential hazards. Overtime, night, weekend, and on-call work may be required, with appropriate PPE provided.

Minimum Qualifications

• Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
• Five years of professional wastewater treatment operation experience, including three years supervisory.
• Valid California driver’s license.
• Current Grade V Wastewater Treatment Certificate from SWRCB.
