Job summary

University of Pennsylvania's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery seeks a Chief Operating Officer serving as the Chair's senior strategic and operational counterpart. The COO translates the Chair's vision into execution while aligning with Penn Medicine's broader priorities across clinical, research, educational and administrative domains.

Qualifications

• Master's Degree required in healthcare, business administration, or related field.
• At least 10 years of progressively responsible administrative and financial leadership experience in an academic medicine and/or research setting.
• Experience with financial oversight of a multi-million dollar enterprise.

Job description

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, with a matrixed reporting relationship to the Executive Director of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP), the Chief Operating Officer serves as the Chair's senior strategic and operational counterpart and the Department's senior administrative executive. The COO is responsible for translating the Chair's vision and departmental strategy into execution while ensuring alignment with Penn Medicine's broader strategic, clinical, academic and operational priorities.

The COO provides executive leadership across the Department's clinical, research, educational, financial and administrative missions and develops the organizational infrastructure, operating models and leadership capabilities necessary to achieve sustained performance and growth. Working across Penn Medicine, the COO advances clinical integration, patient access, quality and safety, financial performance, workforce strategy, faculty recruitment, digital transformation, and program and network growth.

As Penn Medicine continues to evolve as an integrated health system, the COO is expected to think and act as an enterprise leader—bridging organizational boundaries, aligning stakeholders across sites and entities, and balancing the needs of the Department with the long-term interests of Penn Medicine. Success requires an exceptional partnership with the Chair, strong relationships with faculty and clinical leaders, and the ability to lead through influence in a highly complex academic health system

Master's Degree required in healthcare, business administration, or related field and at least 10 years of progressively responsible administrative and financial leadership experience in an academic medicine and/or research setting or comparably complex environment and with financial oversight of at least a $15-million enterprise. A keen understanding of and experience with integrated academic healthcare systems and in clinical practice management. Knowledge of healthcare reimbursement and medical school research funding is critical.
