Job summary

Barnstable seeks an accomplished public safety executive to become Chief of Police, leading Cape Cod's largest police organization and strengthening public confidence. The ideal candidate will demonstrate ethical leadership, operational credibility, and a strategic vision aligned with community policing and seasonal demands.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field required; master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience as a certified police officer.
• Minimum of six (6) years of command-level leadership experience in a law enforcement agency of similar size.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in personnel management, police operations, budgeting, and organizational performance.
• Proven ability in strategic planning, complex decision-making, community engagement, labor relations, and employee development.
• Strong communication, organizational leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Graduation from FBI National Academy/Senior Management Institute for Police or comparable executive leadership program is highly valued.
• Experience leading a police department serving a complex municipal or seasonal community is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and executive oversight for all Department personnel, operations, programs, and resources.
• Oversee budgeting, performance management, recruitment, training, and succession planning.
• Ensure public communication, professional standards, and interagency coordination.
• Balance neighborhood safety with seasonal demands and community needs.
• Foster accountability, trust, innovation, and continuous improvement across the Department.
