It supports the larger goals of economic and social vitality for NYC residents, workers, and businesses. Responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility, markings, and ensuring safety for all road users.
The Office of Livable Streets (OLS) focuses on strategic planning, community engagement, research, policy, design, implementation, and long-term management to create livable streets that promote safety, accessibility, inclusion, resiliency, active modes, community cohesion, and economic vitality. They also work to enhance NYC's pedestrian, bicycle, and micro-mobility networks, emphasizing Priority Investment Areas, mode shift, and reimagining streets. The office develops innovative programs, design typologies, project delivery, and analysis tools to meet the evolving needs of NYC's population.
The Bicycle Unit manages the nation's largest network of on-street bicycle facilities (over 1,000 miles), focusing on street safety and increasing bike ridership. The Chief of Bikes and Micro-mobility will collaborate closely with the Office of Livable Streets to develop, implement, and maintain NYC's bicycle and greenway networks, emphasizing safety, mode shift, education, and micro-mobility growth. The role involves innovative design, policy development, inter-agency collaboration, outreach, and education to promote cycling and micro-mobility, ensuring alignment with city and agency objectives.
