Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and strategic direction for the department's clinical, educational, and research activities.
• Oversee pediatric anesthesia services across preoperative assessment, intraoperative management, and postoperative recovery.

• Ensure compliance with hospital policies, guidelines, and regulatory standards (The Joint Commission, CMS).
• Develop and implement departmental protocols and quality initiatives.
• Recruit, retain, mentor, and credential anesthesiology physicians and staff.

• Participate in institutional strategic planning and medical executive committee.

Shriners Children's St. Louis is recruiting a full-time Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia to provide strategic, clinical, and administrative leadership for its dedicated perioperative team.

This physician leader will guide the delivery of high-quality, safe, and family-centered anesthesia care across perioperative services while overseeing departmental operations, quality and safety initiatives, professional performance, and alignment with institutional goals and regulatory requirements.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia will maintain an active clinical practice while leading the department's clinical, operational, educational, and research activities. The role serves as the primary liaison among the anesthesia department, facility leadership, and other clinical departments.

Practice highlights include:

• Two operating rooms staffed daily
• An all-physician anesthesia model with no CRNA supervision
• A rotating 1-in-4 home-call schedule
• Clinical care spanning general orthopedics, spine, upper and lower extremity, sports medicine, and select plastic surgeries
• A multidisciplinary environment supported by pediatric orthopedic surgeons, Advanced Practice Providers, nursing, Physical and Occupational Therapy, and recreational therapy staff
• Opportunities to advance quality, safety, professional development, operational excellence, and program growth

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide leadership and strategic direction for the department's clinical, educational, and research activities
• Oversee pediatric anesthesia services across preoperative assessment, intraoperative management, and postoperative recovery
• Maintain an active clinical practice aligned with departmental needs
• Ensure compliance with hospital policies, professional guidelines, and regulatory standards, including those of The Joint Commission and CMS
• Develop and implement departmental protocols, clinical pathways, and quality assurance initiatives
• Recruit, retain, mentor, and support the professional development and credentialing of anesthesiology physicians and staff
• Manage the departmental budget, resource allocation, and capital planning in collaboration with administrative partners
• Serve on the hospital's medical executive committee and participate in institution-wide strategic planning
• Oversee anesthesia coverage for surgical services, procedural areas, and applicable pain management programs
• Foster collaboration among surgeons, nursing leadership, clinical teams, and hospital administration
• Lead or support research, publications, and educational programs in pediatric anesthesiology
• Participate in incident reviews, peer review, and the development of corrective action plans
• Advance patient experience, practice improvement, and sustainable program growth

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have:

• An MD or DO from an accredited medical school
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited anesthesiology residency
• Completion of a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship
• A minimum of seven years of post-residency clinical experience in anesthesiology, with a demonstrated focus on pediatric care
• Board certification or eligibility in anesthesiology through the American Board of Anesthesiology, with subspecialty certification in pediatric anesthesiology
• Eligibility for active, unrestricted medical licensure in Missouri
• Eligibility for active DEA registration
• BLS for Healthcare Providers and PALS certification
• Eligibility for hospital credentialing and clinical privileges
• A record of clinical excellence, team leadership, quality improvement, and/or academic contributions
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and strategic decision-making skills
• The ability to inspire and lead a diverse team of physicians and healthcare professionals
• A patient-centered approach and commitment to exceptional care and practice growth
• Experience leading teams through organizational change with a positive and proactive approach

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Three or more years of leadership or administrative experience in an academic or hospital-based anesthesia department is highly preferred.

COMPENSATION

The annual compensation range for this position is $433,058-$804,250. Compensation is determined by relevant experience and departmental equity.
