The opportunity: The Chief Medical Officer, Global Medical Team role offers an opportunity to apply your clinical expertise and leadership skills to shape Sun Life's medical underwriting strategies.

Reporting to the Corporate Chief Underwriter, this position will contribute to the strategy of identifying and implementing innovative enhancements and efficiencies to our underwriting approach by using analytics, as well as advances in medical science and technology, delivering a more simplified purchase process for the customer and more favorable overall results for the company.

In addition to a focus on the global marketplace, the Chief Medical Officer will be responsible at times for researching medical conditions of importance to insurance underwriting and collaborating with other members of Sun Life's global offices to suggest enhancements to our proprietary guidelines and approaches.

The ideal candidate is a licensed MD with a minimum of 10-15 years of clinical practice in internal medicine or any sub-specialties, or insurance medicine experience. They should have a sound understanding of insurance company operations and expert knowledge of medical science, technology, and their impact on mortality.

How you will contribute:

  1. Lead a team of MDs across Sun Life to maintain exemplary service standards and quality on case consultations for life underwriting.
  2. Maintain industry presence, build networks with internal and external partners, stay informed of medical and technical advancements, and participate in industry committees.
  3. Ensure Sun Life remains at the forefront of underwriting by monitoring and reviewing medical science developments and translating them into underwriting guidelines.
  4. Participate in developing the medical content of the proprietary underwriting manual WWUM.
  5. Contribute to underwriting-related marketing, educational, and promotional materials.
  6. Provide education to Sun Life Global Underwriting teams.
  7. Consult with the underwriting audit team on case assessments.
  8. Act as secondary liaison with reinsurance Medical Directors.
  9. Liaise for high-cost drug business to assess new FDA-approved drugs for rare diseases.
  10. Provide medical support for international divisions and the corporate Chief Underwriter.
  11. Work with medical directors to ensure adherence to governance and foster strong relationships.

What you will bring with you:

  1. MD with 10-15 years of insurance medicine experience.
  2. Board certification in insurance medicine is preferred.
  3. Experience in Asian, Canadian, and American insurance markets.
  4. Extensive knowledge of insurance medicine, clinical medicine, and human pathology.
  5. Medical degree from an accredited school in the US, Canada, or equivalent.
  6. Strong mathematical skills and understanding of insurance pricing.
  7. Knowledge of medical underwriting and global risks.
  8. Statistical analysis skills and familiarity with research methodologies.
  9. Technical and medical research background with writing skills.
  10. Specialist certification in internal medicine or related sub-specialty is a plus.
  11. Clinical medical practice experience.
  12. Experience revising underwriting guidelines is an asset.
  13. Ability to monitor medical science developments and assess their relevance to insurance medicine.
  14. Adaptability and quick understanding of insurance medicine versus clinical medicine.
  15. Excellent communication skills.
  16. Ability to lead and collaborate in a team environment.
  17. Creative problem-solving skills.
  18. Open to new ideas and flexible thinking.
  19. Leadership skills to motivate and resolve conflicts effectively.
  20. Languages other than English (e.g., French, Mandarin, Cantonese) are desirable.

Salary Range: $161,600-$258,600. Compensation depends on skills, experience, education, and location. The role may include performance incentives.
