The opportunity: The Chief Medical Officer, Global Medical Team role offers an opportunity to apply your clinical expertise and leadership skills to shape Sun Life's medical underwriting strategies.

Reporting to the Corporate Chief Underwriter, this position will contribute to the strategy of identifying and implementing innovative enhancements and efficiencies to our underwriting approach by using analytics, as well as advances in medical science and technology, delivering a more simplified purchase process for the customer and more favorable overall results for the company.

In addition to a focus on the global marketplace, the Chief Medical Officer will be responsible at times for researching medical conditions of importance to insurance underwriting and collaborating with other members of Sun Life's global offices to suggest enhancements to our proprietary guidelines and approaches.

The ideal candidate is a licensed MD with a minimum of 10-15 years of clinical practice in internal medicine or related sub-specialties, or insurance medicine experience. They should have a sound understanding of insurance company operations, and expert knowledge of medical science, technology, and their impact on mortality.

How you will contribute:

  • Lead a team of MDs across the global Sun Life enterprise to maintain exemplary service standards and quality of work on case consultations for life underwriters.
  • Maintain industry presence, build networks and stay informed of medical and technical advancements, industry rules, and regulations.
  • Ensure Sun Life remains at the forefront of underwriting by monitoring and translating medical science advancements into underwriting guidelines.
  • Participate in developing the medical content of the proprietary underwriting manual WWUM.
  • Translate complex medical research into underwriting guidelines.
  • Contribute to underwriting-related marketing, educational, and promotional materials.
  • Provide education to Sun Life's global underwriting teams.
  • Consult with the underwriting audit team on case assessments.
  • Act as secondary liaison with reinsurance Medical Directors.
  • Liaise for high-cost drug business to assess the efficacy of newly approved drugs.
  • Support medical aspects for international divisions and the corporate Chief Underwriter.
  • Work with medical directors across the enterprise to ensure adherence to governance and foster strong relationships.

What you will bring with you:

  • MD with 10-15 years of insurance medicine experience.
  • Board certification in insurance medicine preferred.
  • Experience in Asian, Canadian, and American insurance markets.
  • Extensive knowledge of insurance medicine, clinical medicine, and human pathology.
  • Medical degree from an accredited medical school in the US, Canada, or equivalent.
  • Strong mathematical skills and basic understanding of insurance pricing.
  • Knowledge of medical underwriting and associated risks worldwide.
  • Statistical analysis skills and familiarity with research methodologies.
  • Background in technical and medical research, with technical writing skills.
  • Specialist certification in internal medicine or related sub-specialty is desirable.
  • Experience in clinical medical practice.
  • Experience revising underwriting guidelines is an asset.
  • Ability to monitor and interpret medical science developments for insurance relevance.
  • Adaptability and quick understanding of insurance medicine versus clinical medicine.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Leadership ability and teamwork skills.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility of thought and openness to new ideas.
  • Ability to motivate and foster a positive work environment.
  • Multilingual abilities (e.g., French, Mandarin, Cantonese) are desirable.

Salary Range: $161,600-$258,600. Compensation will be determined based on skills, experience, and location. The role is eligible for performance-based incentives.
