Job summary

Qualifications

Mechanic

Position within Tazewell County Public Schools Transportation, located at the Bus Garage. This non‑exempt support role involves repair, overhaul, inspection, and maintenance of school buses, trucks, and other vehicles.

Essential Functions and Typical Tasks
  • Examine and analyze vehicles, discussing damage with the Garage Supervisor.
  • Plan work procedures using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
  • Prepare and use Windows Office applications for reporting.
  • Use a hydraulic jack or hoist to raise vehicles for accessing mechanical units.
  • Remove units (engine, transmission, differential) with appropriate tools.
  • Disassemble units and inspect parts with micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
  • Repair or replace parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings.
  • Overhaul or replace carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and alternators.
  • Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
  • Relin and adjust brakes, align front ends, repair or replace shock absorbers, and solder minor leaks.
  • Mend damaged bodies and fenders with hammer, filler, or welding.
  • Replace headlights and install or repair accessories (heaters, mirrors, wipers).
  • Provide minor on‑route repairs such as spark plug, battery, bulb changes, and wire connections.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Follow safety and protective equipment protocols.
  • Attend in‑service training to improve mechanical skills.
  • Adopt proper cleaning, storage, and disposal practices.
  • Ensure the safety of students, equipment, and facilities.
  • Report accidents or hazards to the Garage Supervisor promptly.
  • Comply with school and division regulations, policies, and non‑discriminatory practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director or Garage Supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General understanding of county operations, safe school bus operation, patience and communication skills, ability to work with school officials, parents, and students, and adherence to oral and written directions. ASE endorsement as Master School Bus Technician, or active pursuit of the endorsement, is required. Basic diagnostic testing knowledge is essential.

Education and Experience

High‑school graduate or equivalent. Current Virginia School Bus Driver Training Certificate and Commercial Driver’s License with School Bus, Passenger Bus, and Combination Vehicle endorsements. Diesel mechanic training preferred. Demonstrated experience as a journeyman automobile and/or truck fleet mechanic and annual certification as an inspection mechanic by the Virginia Department of State Police.

Special Requirements
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake, School Bus, and Passenger Bus endorsements.
  • Annual physical examination approved by a licensed physician.
  • Meet all State Board of Education requirements for school bus drivers.
  • Attend Behind‑the‑Wheel training led by the Transportation Supervisor.
  • Undergo random and post‑accident drug testing.
  • Maintain good moral character.
Physical Demands

Typical duties include walking, standing, stooping, lifting up to 50 lbs, and occasionally lifting tools up to 75 lbs. Work occurs in the bus garage and on routes throughout the district. Exposure to environmental hazards, noise, and traffic requires appropriate vocal, hearing, and visual acuity.

Evaluation

Performance is evaluated by the Director of Transportation and the Garage Supervisor based on effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities outlined.
