POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Mechanic position is a “hands-on”, working manager that will lead skilled and semi-skilled mechanics in the most difficult and complex vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance and repair work. The individual will be responsible for the most complex mechanical repairs to automotive, diesel, and other power-driven equipment. The Chief Mechanic exercises functional and technical supervision over fleet maintenance staff. Must be a member or become a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 12.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead, train, and assist journey level and semi-skilled mechanics; assign work to mechanics.
2. Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and construction equipment.
3. Monitor and manage CARB’s emissions Data Base for On and Offroad equipment.
4. Fabricate and assemble parts for automotive and heavy equipment.
5. Use welding equipment, drill presses, grinders and a large assortment of other power and hand tools and measurement instruments required for journey level fabrication work.
6. Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, electrical systems, transmissions, differentials, clutches, and heavy construction equipment hydraulic systems.
7. Monitor and manage inventory of shop stock, assisting in the purchasing of Equipment, maintenance parts and materials.
8. Assure proper completion of job assignments with minimum expense and maximum productivity.
9. Certify records of work in progress and completed, including time reports, material requisitions, maintenance records and equipment counts when required.
10. Collaborate closely with supervisors of upcoming jobs for equipment needs.
11. Perform quality control inspections to ensure all repairs meet or exceed regulatory requirements and internal safety and reliability standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Five (5) years of related experience, three (3) of which must be in supervising direct reports.
2. Knowledge of CHP BIT/DOT Inspection program, CARBS emissions for On and Offroad equipment.
3. Must have a full set of journey level hand tools to accomplish assigned work.
4. Commercial Driver’s License.
5. Ability to operate computer systems and learn new software/applications.
6. Must be a member or become a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 12.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Prolonged sitting, standing, walking on unlevel and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties.
2. Occasionally lift 100 pounds with assistance; frequently lift, carry and manipulate up to 50 pounds.
3. Near and far vision when inspecting work.
4. Work in all weather conditions, use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants, drive motorized vehicles, heavy equipment and work around moving traffic and often work with constant interruptions.
5. Ability to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment.
