Job summary

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) seeks a seasoned Illinois-licensed attorney to serve as Chief Legal Counsel. The role reports to the Director, provides strategic legal guidance on environmental statutes, and leads the Division of Legal Counsel with about 40 attorneys and staff.

Key responsibilities include directing rulemaking and enforcement actions, negotiating intergovernmental and pollution-control agreements, and advising senior agency leaders.

Qualifications

• Requires knowledge equivalent to four years of college.
• Four years of administrative and managerial experience.
• Illinois Law License required.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Chief Legal Counsel for IEPA and supervise the Division of Legal Counsel.
• Direct policy development, rulemaking, enforcement actions, and intergovernmental agreements.
• Provide legal advice to Director, Deputy Director, and Bureau Chiefs on statutes and regulations.
• Oversee staff performance, staffing, and annual goal setting.
