Job summary

Washburn Center seeks a CFO to lead accounting and revenue cycle management, guiding financial planning, reporting, and strategic initiatives. The role collaborates with agency leaders, employees, and the Board of Trustees to ensure sound fiscal stewardship and growth.

The CFO will drive budgeting, forecasting, and financial models, while coordinating audits and contract negotiations with stakeholders. A CPA/MBA and healthcare nonprofit experience are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • Finance leadership experience within healthcare, nonprofit, or complex service-based orgs preferred.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare reimbursement, contracts, and revenue cycle management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the finance team and drive accountability across departments.
  • Ensure GAAP compliance and robust internal controls with accurate reporting.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and monthly financial analysis for decision-making.
  • Partner with CEO and executive team on strategic planning, risk management, and resource allocation.
  • Coordinate external relationships, audits, and board-level financial reporting.

Job description

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) leads the accounting and revenue cycle management teams in sustaining healthy fiscal stewardship and management of the company’s diverse revenue streams and financial management systems. They are a collaborative partner with agency leaders, employees, and the Board of Trustees in providing expert counsel regarding the financial performance of the organization. The CFO guides financial planning, monitoring and reporting, business planning, and negotiation.

Salary Range: $185,000 – $220,000

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and align financial strategies with Washburn Center's mission and goals, including establishing key performance indicators and fostering accountability.
  • Anticipate short-term and long-term strategic financial needs for significant capital and program development.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the CEO and a member of the Executive Leadership Team, contributing to long-term organizational planning, resource allocation, and enterprise risk management.
  • Translate financial insights into actionable strategies that advance program growth, operational excellence, and sustainable resource allocation.

Financial Management and Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and maintain effective internal controls and information systems for accurate reporting and analysis.
  • Build a disciplined framework for productivity and analysis.
  • Manage budget preparation, financial forecasting, and monthly reporting while creating tools for informed decision-making.
  • Develop financial forecasting models, support treasury and investment functions, and oversee external relationships.
  • Coordinate managed care contract negotiations, maintain statutory compliance, and manage annual audits and financial matters for stakeholders, including the Board of Trustees.

Team Leadership and Management

  • Lead, mentor, and support the finance team to achieve strong performance.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to strengthen staff skills.
  • Set clear goals and expectations for team members.
  • Model integrity, adaptability, and commitment to the mission.
  • Encourage engagement, resilience, and teamwork during times of change.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives that enhance organizational effectiveness and strengthen financial stewardship across all departments.
  • Champion innovation and change management efforts that elevate financial maturity and organizational resilience.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field, or equivalent experience; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • Finance leadership experience within healthcare, behavioral health, human services, nonprofit, or other complex service-based organizations, including experience leading financial operations and teams.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare reimbursement, including Medicaid, commercial payers, contracts, government grants, and revenue cycle management; experience with federal, state, or county funding sources is preferred.
  • Experience in clinical healthcare, behavioral health, nonprofit, professional services, or other highly regulated environments.
  • Ability to partner effectively with clinical, operational, and executive leaders to evaluate program economics, support decision-making, and translate financial data into meaningful business insights.
  • Experience leading budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, FP&A, treasury, audit, and board-level financial reporting.
  • Hands-on leadership style with the ability and willingness to work directly within financial systems, spreadsheets, and operational processes when needed.
  • Track record of strengthening finance and revenue cycle functions, improving processes, and developing high-performing teams.
  • Experience presenting to and partnering with boards, finance committees, auditors, lenders, and external stakeholders; nonprofit board experience is a plus.
  • Relationship-oriented leader who builds trust, communicates transparently, and operates with a high degree of accountability and collaboration.
  • Appreciation for workforce challenges, reimbursement pressures, and the financial complexities of delivering community-based behavioral healthcare services.

  • Understanding of, or genuine interest in, children's mental health, behavioral health services, and the mission-driven work of improving outcomes for children and families.
