Chief Engineer

As a Chief Engineer at JLL, you will lead comprehensive building operations and engineering management for commercial properties, ensuring optimal performance, sustainability, and safety across complex facility systems. You'll oversee critical building infrastructure including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, and energy management systems while directing a team of skilled technicians and maintenance professionals to deliver exceptional operational excellence. We choose to take the more inspiring, innovative, and optimistic path on our journey toward success, and your technical leadership will be instrumental in implementing cutting-edge building technologies, predictive maintenance programs, and sustainability initiatives that reduce environmental impact while optimizing operational costs. You'll serve as the primary technical advisor for property management teams and clients, providing strategic guidance on capital improvements, system upgrades, and long-term facility planning that enhances asset value and tenant satisfaction. What sets JLL apart is our culture of collaboration, locally and across the globe, and you'll work closely with cross-functional teams including property managers, leasing professionals, and corporate real estate specialists to deliver integrated solutions. At JLL, we are collectively shaping a brighter way - for our clients, ourselves and our fellow employees, and your engineering expertise will contribute to creating safe, efficient, and sustainable workplace environments that support business success and community wellbeing.

What your day-to-day will look like

Lead and manage engineering teams responsible for maintaining complex building systems across single or multiple commercial properties in your assigned portfolio. Develop and implement comprehensive preventive maintenance programs, energy management strategies, and capital improvement plans to optimize building performance and lifecycle costs. Oversee emergency response procedures and coordinate with local authorities, contractors, and internal teams during critical incidents or system failures. Manage annual operating budgets for engineering operations including maintenance contracts, utility costs, and capital expenditure planning with detailed financial reporting. Conduct regular building inspections and system assessments to identify improvement opportunities, code compliance issues, and potential safety hazards. Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and service providers to ensure quality delivery of specialized maintenance services and major system installations or upgrades. Prepare detailed technical reports and presentations for property owners, investors, and senior management regarding building performance, sustainability metrics, and recommended improvements. Ensure compliance with all applicable building codes, environmental regulations, OSHA safety standards, and local jurisdiction requirements. Mentor junior engineering staff and technicians while fostering a culture of safety, continuous learning, and operational excellence across the engineering team.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering, or related technical field with minimum 7 years of commercial building operations experience. Professional engineering license (PE) or equivalent technical certifications with demonstrated expertise in commercial HVAC, electrical, and building automation systems. Extensive knowledge of building codes, life safety systems, environmental regulations, and OSHA compliance requirements for commercial properties. Strong leadership and team management skills with experience supervising technical staff and coordinating with diverse stakeholder groups. Advanced proficiency in building automation systems, energy management software, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS). Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with proven track record of managing complex technical challenges and emergency response situations. Strong budget management and financial analysis skills with experience controlling operational costs and capital expenditure planning.

Preferred qualifications

Master's degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or related technical field with specialization in building systems or energy management. 10+ years of progressive engineering leadership experience in commercial real estate with exposure to Class A office buildings or mixed-use developments. Professional certifications such as CEM (Certified Energy Manager), LEED AP, or similar sustainability and energy efficiency credentials. Experience with smart building technologies, IoT systems, and advanced building analytics platforms for predictive maintenance and performance optimization. Knowledge of renewable energy systems, carbon reduction strategies, and ESG reporting requirements for institutional real estate portfolios. Previous experience managing engineering operations for large-scale properties exceeding 500,000 square feet or complex multi-building campuses. Advanced project management capabilities with experience leading major capital improvement projects and system modernization initiatives. Bilingual capabilities to support diverse tenant populations and coordinate with international service providers in JLL's global markets.
