Springer Nature seeks a Chief Editor to lead the editorial direction of a new journal from its inception. You will shape strategy, raise the journal’s scientific standing, and ensure high quality, timely publication of research.

You will manage editorial teams and collaborate with authors, reviewers, and board members to advance the journal’s objectives, balancing ambition with practical execution in a global, hybrid environment.

Qualifications

• Educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in a relevant field.
• Broad interests and knowledge in the field of biomedical technologies.
• Demonstrable editorial experience in the selection and processing of manuscripts.
• Effective time management and prioritization skills.
• A can-do approach to problem-solving.
• Influential communicator with the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and across different portfolios.
• Willing to travel occasionally and represent BMC/Springer Nature at external events.
• Knowledge of current challenges and opportunities in scientific publishing.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a high-performing editorial team, directing day-to-day workloads, building team capability, and ensuring manuscripts are managed per policies, quality standards, and timelines.
• Demonstrates strong leadership through building effective teams and talent development.
• Recruit, onboard, and engage external Editorial Board members and foster collaborative relationships to support journal objectives.
• Demonstrates success in building networks and influencing diverse stakeholders to drive editorial excellence.
• Develop and follow a high-level strategic plan for the growth and development of the journal.
• Determine and take responsibility for content published in the journal and drive growth in quality and quantity.
• Handle original research papers and work with editors on manuscript selection and peer review.
• Represent the journal to authors, reviewers, and external editors; align priorities with community needs.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve shared goals.
• Build trusted relationships with internal colleagues and external academic stakeholders.
• Manage competing priorities and stakeholder expectations.
• Communicate clearly across global teams.
