Chief Attorney - Workers' Rights Unit

Salary Range: $105,000.00 To $127,000.00 Annually

Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) seeks an experienced leader for its newly-created Workers’ Rights Unit in Baltimore City. The Chief Attorney will lead training, supervision, and the structure of the unit to ensure high-quality legal representation for low-wage workers, focusing on issues like criminal record expungement, child support policies, and licensing requirements.

The ideal candidate will have relevant legal experience and will help expand representation into areas such as wage disputes and worker misclassification. The role involves supervising staff, engaging with the community, and contributing to MLA’s organizational leadership.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement the vision and structure of the Workers’ Rights Unit.
  • Identify and address staff training needs in collaboration with the Training Department.
  • Collaborate with partners for client referrals and develop resources and practice materials.
  • Supervise and mentor attorneys, paralegals, and staff, including case review and assignment.
  • Lead hiring efforts and foster a cohesive team environment.
  • Ensure effective legal assistance and address systemic issues affecting low-income communities.
  • Participate in advocacy efforts, develop community relationships, and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Assist in resource development and address client grievances.
Qualifications
  • Law degree and Maryland Bar admission.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in legal representation impacting low-wage workers.
  • Five or more years’ experience in legal services or management preferred.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and supervision skills.
  • Experience with legal technology and case management systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income populations and community engagement.
Schedule, Benefits, and Application
