Job summary

Communities In Schools of Virginia (CIS-VA) seeks a Senior Vice President of Advancement to shape and execute the long-term resource strategy. This role drives fundraising, communications, and external engagement to secure transformational gifts and sustain growth across the statewide CIS network.

You will work with the President & CEO and Board to design multi-year advancement plans, foster donor relationships, and elevate CIS-VA’s visibility.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive advancement or fundraising experience, with at least 5 in senior leadership.
• Demonstrated success securing major and transformational gifts ($1M+ preferred)
• Experience with government grants and statewide policy engagement
• Proven experience in collaborative or network-wide fundraising initiatives
• Strong leadership and team-building skills with a track record of mentoring and developing staff
• Exceptional communication and relationship-building abilities
• Passion for CIS’s mission of removing barriers to student success and ensuring access to opportunity for every learner

Responsibilities

• Strategic Fundraising and Implementation: Lead statewide fundraising initiatives, build shared strategies with CIS affiliates.
• Design and execute a multi-year advancement strategy with diverse funding sources.
• Partner with President & CEO and Board to secure seven- and eight-figure gifts.
• Develop metrics and report progress to leadership and the Board; keep Board informed.
• Strengthen advancement infrastructure, including database management and prospect identification.
• Develop and manage the annual Development Department budget with the President & CEO.
• Evaluate fundraising activities to ensure quality and relevance toward goals.
• Oversee annual development communications calendar with Grants Management.
• Donor Relationship and Engagement: Build relationships across the organization; integrate fundraising with program goals.
• Foster collaboration across the Virginia network to maximize donor engagement.
• Represent CIS-VA as a thought leader with funders and statewide partners.
• Build and manage a portfolio of transformational prospects and donors.
• Leadership and Supervision: Oversee advancement team members; ensure alignment and excellence.
• Represent CIS-VA at national/state/local meetings as assigned by the president.
• Visit affiliate programming to understand CIS model and expansion activities.
• Mentor and empower staff to enhance development activities.
• Communication and Marketing: Oversee branded communications; align to strategic plans.
• Coordinate marketing with fundraising plans and CIS branding guidelines.
• Prepare collateral for affiliate dissemination; work with consultants and staff.
