Job summary

The California Academy of Sciences seeks a Chief Advancement Officer to lead a large, high‑performing development team through a period of transformation. This hands‑on leader will partner with scientists, educators, and the Board to energize fundraising and help shape a comprehensive campaign.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the CAO will set strategy, manage major donor portfolios, and advance engagement across the Bay Area and beyond.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degrees valued.
15+ years of fundraising experience with senior management.
Experience soliciting six- and seven-figure gifts.
Experience in San Francisco Bay Area philanthropy.
Background in museums, conservation, science, or education fundraising preferred.

Responsibilities

Build and lead a culture of philanthropy across the Advancement division and the institution.
Develop and activate relationships with scientists, educators, and Board members for fundraising.
Identify needs and plan near- and long-term campaigns (annual, capital, endowment).
Expand donor programs and seek new revenue streams with donor recognition and affinity programs.
Oversee board solicitations and prepare the Board for campaigns.
Lead a traditional advancement portfolio: annual fund, membership, major gifts, planned giving.
Manage development operations, including CRM, gift processing, and data reporting.
