Job summary

STRS Ohio seeks a Chief Actuary to lead actuarial operations and enterprise risk management for its Pension and Health Care programs. Reports to the deputy executive director, Finance and CFO, guiding valuation analytics, policy advisement, and risk management.

Ideal candidate holds FSA and AAA memberships with 6–10 years actuarial experience in a pension or consulting setting, and proficiency with Proval software is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, mathematics, finance or business administration.
• Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
• Six to ten years’ experience as an actuary in consulting or pension‑related organization.
• Experience with pension actuarial software such as Proval.

• Oversee data preparation for annual independent actuarial valuations for pension and health care benefits.
• Collaborate with consulting actuary for completion, review and presentation of annual valuations and related analyses.
• Prepare and present actuarial reports to management and STRS Ohio Board meetings as a trusted policy advisor.
• Lead development of long‑term funding strategies for pension and health care plans.
• Oversee STRS Ohio's Enterprise Risk Management framework integrating actuarial, financial, investment and operational risks.

General Summary

Under the direction of the deputy executive director, Finance and Chief Financial Officer (CFO), plan and manage all actuarial and enterprise risk management activities. Responsible for day‑to‑day actuarial operations and inquiries at State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio (STRS Ohio).

Summary Of Responsibilities

• Oversee preparation of data for annual independent actuarial valuations for pension and health care benefits.
• Work closely with consulting actuary for completion, review and presentation of annual valuations and other analysis prepared for pension and health care benefits.
• Prepare and present actuarial reports and analysis to management, stakeholders and State Teachers Retirement Board meetings serving as a trusted advisor in policy decisions.
• Lead development and recommend long‑term funding strategies for pension and health care plans, incorporating actuarial best practices.
• Lead and oversee STRS Ohio's Enterprise Risk Management framework, integrating actuarial, financial, investment, operational and strategic risks.
