AmHyTech is developing breakthrough technologies to transform how ammonia is stored, transported, and converted into hydrogen. Our proprietary technology enables ammonia storage at ambient temperature and pressure, eliminating the need for conventional high-pressure or refrigerated storage systems. In parallel, we are developing an innovative electrochemical process to generate hydrogen directly from ammonia.
Selected for Breakthrough Energy Fellows and supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and United State Department of Agriculture (USDA), AmHyTech is advancing next-generation ammonia and hydrogen technologies from laboratory innovation toward commercial deployment.
About the role
AmHyTech is hiring a part-time Electrochemical R&D Engineer to advance our ammonia electrolysis technology, from fundamental catalyst development and bench-scale experimentation to electrochemical cell and stack engineering.
You will play a key role in developing and optimizing electrocatalysts, electrodes, membranes, and electrolyzer systems to improve hydrogen generation efficiency, durability, and scalability.
We are looking for a hands-on engineer who combines a strong understanding of electrochemistry with practical chemical engineering expertise. You should be comfortable designing experiments, synthesizing materials, building and testing electrochemical systems, and translating laboratory results into engineering improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, synthesize, and optimize electrocatalysts for ammonia oxidation (AOR) and hydrogen evolution (HER).
- Develop and test electrodes using techniques such as electrodeposition, hydrothermal synthesis, and other catalyst fabrication methods.
- Design and execute bench-scale electrochemical experiments, including electrochemical characterization, performance evaluation, and data analysis.
- Evaluate and optimize ion-exchange membranes, separators, and electrode configurations.
- Design, build, and improve electrochemical cells, bipolar plates, flow fields, and electrolyzer stacks.
- Develop experimental plans, analyze performance data, troubleshoot systems, and support technology scale-up.
- Contribute to intellectual property development, technical publications, and research grant proposals.
- Maintain safe laboratory practices and accurate experimental documentation.
Required Qualifications
- MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Electrochemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, electrochemical kinetics, and mass transport.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with bench-scale electrochemical experimentation, catalyst synthesis, and electrode fabrication.
- Experience with electrochemical characterization techniques such as CV, LSV, EIS, and chronoamperometry.
- Familiarity with electrochemical cell design, testing, and performance optimization.
- Ability to independently develop experimental plans, analyze results, and troubleshoot laboratory systems.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with a hands-on approach to research and development.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary startup environment.
Nice-to-have
- Experience with ammonia electrolysis, AOR, HER, or related electrochemical technologies.
- Experience with ion-exchange membranes, membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs), and electrolyzer stack development.
- Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks or similar) and familiarity with CFD modeling.
- Knowledge of computational chemistry, including DFT, first-principles calculations, or molecular dynamics (MD).
- Experience with automated electrochemical testing, data acquisition, and analysis using Python or MATLAB.
- Experience preparing research proposals and grant applications, particularly for NSF or DOE programs.
- Experience scaling electrochemical processes from laboratory to pilot-scale systems.
Negotiable based on qualifications and level of expertise.
Benefits include:
- Paid sick leave in accordance with Michigan law.
- Health insurance benefits, subject to eligibility and company policy.
- Professional development and opportunities to contribute to scientific publications and technical conferences.
- Opportunity to contribute to intellectual property and next-generation hydrogen technologies.
- Potential for expanded responsibilities as the company grows.
This is an ongoing part-time position with an initial performance review after three months.
Location:
This will be an in-person role located in Detroit, MI.
