Job summary

MissionHires is seeking experienced chemists and process engineers to design realistic AI evaluation tasks. You will create scenarios, prompts, and supporting files, then run frontier AI models and judge results against professional standards.

Applicants should have hands-on data experience, strong English communication, and comfort with Python or similar tools. This is a fully remote contract with flexible hours and pay per completed project stage.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of applied experience in chemistry, chemical/ process engineering, materials, environmental science, earth sciences, or a related field.
• Bachelor's degree in progress or higher; 2+ years of experience outside undergraduate study is preferred.
• Hands-on experience with scientific or engineering work using real data and relevant analysis tools.
• Ability to explain technical results clearly and identify what was done correctly or incorrectly.

Responsibilities

• Compare model outputs from the same prompt and document strengths and failures.
• Create detailed grading rubrics covering methods, calculations, units, safety, failure modes, and acceptance criteria.
• Identify concrete model failures and misinterpretations.
• Create realistic professional task packages ranging from compact tasks to multi-day scenarios.
• Contribute across chemistry and related disciplines and refine others' tasks.

Job description

When AI gets the details wrong in your field, real people pay for it. The people who know the work best have to be the ones training these models. You’re not being replaced by AI. You’re making sure it’s used accurately and safely.

Responsibilities:

• Design challenging, realistic chemistry and chemical/process engineering tasks based on professional practice, including scenarios, prompts, and supporting files such as test data, specifications, simulation outputs, lab records, and technical reports.
• Run tasks through frontier AI models and evaluate the resulting calculations, analyses, design reviews, experimental plans, or reports against professional standards.
• Compare model outputs produced from the same prompt and supporting materials, determine which is stronger, and document specific strengths and failures.
• Write detailed grading rubrics defining the assumptions, methods, calculations, units, magnitudes, safety considerations, failure modes, and acceptance criteria required for a correct response.
• Identify and document concrete model failures, including unit or scaling errors, misread data, unsupported conclusions, fabricated or ignored source material, missed safety or boundary conditions, and off-brief interpretations.
• Create and work with realistic professional files ranging from compact task packages to multi-day scenarios.
• Contribute across chemistry and adjacent scientific disciplines, and review and refine tasks created by other expert contributors.

Requirements:

• 2+ years of applied experience preferred in chemistry, chemical or process engineering, materials, environmental science, earth sciences, or a related scientific or engineering discipline.
• Bachelor's degree in progress or higher; 2+ years of experience outside undergraduate study is preferred.
• Current or recent hands-on individual-contributor experience performing scientific or engineering work, rather than solely managerial experience.
• Experience working with real experimental, instrument, measurement, test, process, simulation, or laboratory data and the relevant analysis tools.
• Comfort with statistical and experimental reasoning, including experimental design, measurement error, uncertainty, and common statistical pitfalls.
• Ability to assess technical work outside a narrow specialty and explain what was performed correctly or incorrectly.
• Full professional or native-level written and spoken English, with the ability to clearly explain why a technical result is wrong.
• General familiarity with AI and LLM tools and the ability to distinguish well-reasoned outputs from plausible but incorrect ones.
• Coding or scientific computing skills are a strong plus and required for some projects; Python or similar languages and command-line experience are preferred.
• Baseline technical literacy with cloud file tools, browser profiles, desktop application installation, file conversion, and file sharing.
