THE POSITION

If you have a talent for performing detailed analyses of environmental samples to detect key pollutants using advanced techniques and equipment, including methods validated by the U.S. EPA and other recognized standards, we want to hear from you. The Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a Chemist 1 with strong analytical skills and a commitment to collaboration, dedicated to making a positive impact on communities and the environment in Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will be responsible for interpreting and assessing data derived from analyses. Your tasks will involve organizing samples to ensure efficient and timely processing, as well as preparing essential reagents, standards, spikes, and other quality control samples. You will also conduct efficiency calibrations and standardize reagents, while preparing samples for analysis through grinding, drying, and both gravimetric and volumetric methods. It is crucial to maintain a detailed laboratory notebook to assist in data interpretation and uphold the chain of custody. Additionally, you will perform preventative maintenance on analytical instruments, coordinate with service technicians for repairs, and demonstrate proficiency in various troubleshooting techniques to ensure the instruments remain operational.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $50,836 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry;or
  • A bachelor's degree that includes 30 credits in chemistry or biochemistry.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
