Your impact

A person working as a Chemist performs analytical laboratory test work to support Newmont global operations with prescribed procedures independently under minimal supervision. The Chemist in this classification is responsible for performing a broad range of analytical procedures and tasks, including some automated instrumentation. The Chemist will perform duties as directed and needed by the company.

***This is a contract/temporary position with expected duration of 10-12 months with the possibility to extend longer based on performance and business requirements.***

As part of our team you will
  • The Chemist may guide the work of laboratory technicians and contingent employees in standard and routine analytical techniques.
  • Communicate expectations and status of current workload.
  • Routine upkeep, editing, and writing of analytical SOPs and JSAs.
  • Ability to multitask and move between laboratory tasks.
  • Use of LIMS for logging samples, data entry, and data reporting.
  • Act as a professional representative while interacting with internal and external Newmont personnel.
  • Knowledge and capable of training/managing manual wet-chemistry techniques, gold and copper extractions, and multi-element acid digestions.
  • Proficient in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of automated instrumentation: LECO Combustion Analyzers, Mercury by Combustion, Mercury by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption, Auto-Titrators.
  • Develop skills in operation, basic maintenance, basic troubleshooting of Microwave Plasma Atomic Emissions Spectrometer (MP-AES).
  • Develop skills in operation, basic maintenance, basic troubleshooting of ICP-OES.
  • Participates, supports, and learns from analytical method development opportunities.
  • Leads the procurement of existing technologies needed in the analytical laboratory to replace or improve current instrumentation.
  • Involved in the procurement of new technologies to enhance the capabilities in the analytical department.
  • Develop skills in Fire Assay Lab; gain knowledge of process and workflow and gain a deeper understanding of sample products processed in this space.
  • Proficient in operating the Flow Injection Analyzer (FIA) for inorganic nutrients and cyanide.
  • Capable of ordering and keeping track of chemical inventory for the laboratory.
Prerequisites for success in this role
  • Bachelor’s Degree/Master Degree in Chemistry, or related field is required.
  • Must possess basic computer skills such as ability to enter data into a database and work with common spreadsheet and word processing programs such as Excel or MS Word
  • Capable of solving basic mathematical problems
  • Ability to follow and deliver instructions and work in a team environment
  • Capable of understanding flow sheets, mechanical drawings and written procedures
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and MSHA regulatory issues are also required.
  • 2-5 years’ work experience in relevant field is necessary.
  • 2-5 years’ experience in laboratory setting is preferred.
  • 2-5 years’ experience with LECO Combustion Analyzers, Mercury by Combustion, Mercury by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption, Auto-Titrators, MP-AES, and ICP-OES is preferred.
Your work environment
  • The position works on-site at Newmont's Malozemoff Technical Facility in Englewood, CO.
  • Maintains focus with repetitive tasks lasting 6-9 hours per day.
  • Work with laboratory standard chemicals, chemicals awareness is a must.
  • Wear personal protective equipment including steel toe shoes, safety glasses, respirator, earplugs, and gloves to perform duties safely.
  • Willingness to put in extra hours as projects and priorities dictate.
  • Work will be conducted in office and laboratory environments with occasional requirement to enter mine operating and office areas
  • Potential to lift heavy objects (<25lbs).

The salary range offered for this overtime-eligible role is USD $30-35/hour. The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience.
