Job summary

PPG is seeking a Chemical Technician to join our Dearborn, MI location. The role reports to the Plant Manager and operates on a 2 pm–10 pm shift, Monday through Friday, onsite.

Training will be provided to cover any skill gaps, and weekend overtime may be required based on production needs.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience in a lab or chemical operations environment.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

  • Team collaboration with technicians and engineers to troubleshoot production issues.
  • Adhere to Plant Safety Rules including PPE usage and safety protocols.
  • Test and monitor quality of chemicals in pretreatment baths, E-coat tanks, and wastewater systems.
  • Perform routine physical and chemical testing on metal parts for coating weight, alkalinity, acidity, conductivity, etc.
  • Collect daily chemical samples from the production line and log precise measurements (pH, conductivity, titration).
  • Clean, maintain, and calibrate lab equipment such as pH meters, conductivity meters, and balances.

Job description

PPG is hiring a Chemical Technician to join our team! This position is located onsite at the Dearborn, MI. facility and you will report to the Plant manager.

Shift Time : 2 pm - 10 pm - Monday - Friday

Candidates will be trained on any skill that he/she lacks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Team Collaboration & Support: Work closely with other technicians and engineers to troubleshoot production issues, share testing workloads, and ensure seamless handoffs during shift changes.
  • Workplace Safety: Adhere closely to all Plant Safety Rules including PPE use, hazardous waste handling, and active plant safety protocols.
  • Process Monitoring: Test and monitor the quality of plant chemicals, including pretreatment baths, electro‑coat (E‑coat) tanks, and wastewater systems.
  • Quality Assurance Testing: Perform routine physical and chemical testing on metal parts for coating weight, alkalinity, acidity, conductivity etc.
  • Sample Collection: Collect daily chemical samples from the production line safely and record precision measurements (pH, conductivity, titration etc.).
  • Equipment Maintenance: Clean, maintain, and calibrate standard laboratory equipment such as pH meters, conductivity meter, and analytical balances. Also includes general maintenance of operation equipment
  • Data Logging: Input test results into PLC and flag any out‑of‑specification items to production teams.
  • HMI & Plant Operations: Operate, monitor, and adjust automotive plant equipment using Human‑Machine Interface (HMI) consoles to regulate automated part flows using load/unload conveyor tables
  • Operational Flexibility & Coverage: Provide operational coverage by stepping in for peer technicians during unplanned absences or sick leave to maintain continuous plant production.
  • Weekend Overtime Adaptability: Maintain availability for mandatory weekend overtime shifts driven by customer production schedules, sudden demand changes, or manufacturing spikes.
