Job summary

Veolia North America in the United States seeks a Chemical Operator (Material Handler) to perform routine hazardous and non-hazardous waste tasks, moving solids and liquids under supervision. You will unload and load containers, decontaminate drums, assist with paperwork, and maintain a safe, organized work area.

This role may involve obtaining a NJ Black Seal license to operate a high-pressure boiler and, if eligible, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED is mandatory.
• 3–6 months of hazardous waste or chemical industry experience preferred.
• Forklift proficiency and familiarity with various tools preferred.

Responsibilities

• Load and unload containers of various sizes (totes, drums, tankers).
• Construct boxes/containers, label and load materials.
• Use tools such as impact wrenches and bung wrenches.
• Transport hazardous waste materials within the facility as directed.
• Decontaminate and dispose of empty drums per RCRA guidelines.
• Complete paperwork for processing materials.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Inspect material handling equipment as directed.
• Assist in loading/unloading hazardous and non-hazardous waste at designated sites.
• Perform sampling of hazardous and non-hazardous waste drums and bulk containers.
• Possess NJ Black Seal license to operate high pressure boiler (when applicable).
• Possess CDL if employee qualifies.

Job Description

Position Purpose:

The Chemical Operator (known internally as a Material Handler) is responsible for performing a variety of routine hazardous and non-hazardous waste tasks in the movement of solids and liquids. Under direct supervision, tasks could include all types of manual labor in cleaning and decontamination operations, unloading and loading containers for processing at site or transportation to appropriate facilities.

Primary Duties /Responsibilities:

• Load and unload various size containers (totes, drums, tankers, trailers. etc.)
• Construct boxes and/or fiber containers and stacks, labels, and load containers
• Use a variety of tools such ass impact wrenches and bung wrenches
• Transport hazardous waste materials from storage facilities within the facility as directed.
• Decontaminate and dispose of empty drums and/or containers according to RCRA and disposal guidelines
• Assist in completing all necessary paperwork for processing materials
• Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area
• Inspection material handling equipment as directed
• Assist in the loading/unloading of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials at designated sites utilizing appropriate equipment for which you are appropriately trained.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Sampling of hazardous and non-hazardous waste drums and bulk containers
• Ability to obtain NJ Black Seal License to operate high pressure boiler
• Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers Licence (CDL), if employee qualifies
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education / Experience / Background:

• High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) (MANDATORY)
• Prior work experience of 3 to 6 months in the hazardous waste or chemical industry in a related position with proficiency in handling forklifts and a variety of tools (PREFERRED)

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

• Ability to communicate through reading and writing
• Trained in the use of material handling equipment

Required Certification / Licenses / Training:

• 40-Hour HAZWOPER training (PREFERRED)
• Comply with and enforce all compliance, health, safety, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in accordance with Veolia and agency requirements

Additional Information

Hourly Pay Range: $21 to $22.50 per hour
