Job summary

The City of Mesquite is seeking a Pesticide Applicator to apply chemicals to parks, medians, and rights-of-way, and to maintain chemical inventory and records. You will operate various sprayers and ensure compliance with safety and policy standards.

Responsibilities include maintaining records, assisting with budget forms, and training staff in chemical applications. Requires licenses and a valid driver’s license, with progression toward Aquatics certification within six months.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Two (2) years of direct experience in mixing and applying herbicides and pesticides.

Responsibilities

  • Mix and apply chemical pesticides and herbicides to City parks, athletic fields, medians, rights-of-way, ponds, and special maintenance areas.
  • Prepare records and reports regarding chemical usage/inventories, wind speeds, and temperatures.
  • Maintain inventory of chemicals and equipment; organize and maintain chemical room; issue chemicals to park maintenance personnel for usage.
  • Assist Park administration in preparing lawn and ornamental chemical budget and bid forms.
  • Drive to and from destinations as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Operate a variety of spray equipment including power sprayer, self-contained sprayer, push sprayer, and backpack sprayer.
  • Train and supervise chemical applications of other Park Services Division employees.
  • Perform a variety of park maintenance activities when not applying chemicals including maintenance of landscape areas such as tree pruning, tree/landscape planting, and inspecting various sites for lawn and ornamental pest/disease infestations or problems.
  • Clean and maintain spray equipment and vehicles; service and perform minor repairs on equipment as necessary.
  • Perform random site inspections of areas treated for target pests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

General Summary

Salary: $18.14/hr. minimum - $24.31/hr. max (Depending on qualifications) To apply chemicals to City parks, athletic fields, medians, rights-of-way, ponds and special maintenance areas; to prepare and maintain records of chemical usage; and to maintain the chemical room, provide an ongoing chemical inventory and issue chemicals.


Supervision

General supervision is provided by a District Park Supervisor.


Essential Duties And Responsibilities


  • All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct and Rules of Behavior as outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.

  • Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in city and department attendance policies and procedures.

  • Mix and apply chemical pesticides and herbicides to City parks, athletic fields, medians, rights-of-way, ponds, and special maintenance areas.

  • Prepare records and reports regarding chemical usage/inventories, wind speeds, and temperatures.

  • Maintain inventory of chemicals and equipment; organize and maintain chemical room; issue chemicals to park maintenance personnel for usage.

  • Assist Park administration in preparing lawn and ornamental chemical budget and bid forms.

Minimum Job Requirements

Education


  • High School Diploma or GED.


Experience


  • Two (2) years of direct experience in the mixing and application of herbicides and pesticides in a landscaping, park, or grounds maintenance environment.


Licenses and Certificates


  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

  • Possession of a Non-Commercial Certified Applicator license issued by the State of Texas Structural Pest Control Service with certification in the categories of Lawn and Weed

  • Possession of a license from the Texas Department of Agriculture with certification in categories of Rights-of-Way Pest Control and Plant Pest and Weed Control.


Obtain certification in the category of Aquatics through the Texas Department of Agriculture within six months of employment as a condition of continued employment. Failure to obtain the additional Aquatics certification will result in non-disciplinary termination.


Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm, with overtime and weekends as needed.

The City is self-insured and offers a choice of two medical plans: HSA, and High Deductible Medical Plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Employee medical coverage goes into effect the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates. Employees enrolled in the City's self-insured medical plan also have access to the Mesquite Employee Health Center (MEHC) clinic and pharmacy.


The City offers three dental plan options: a managed plan (DHMO), an indemnity plan (DPPO), an enhanced indemnity plan (DPPO Enhanced). Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates.


The City offers free Vision Insurance to all employees. Dependents can be added for an additional fee.


Basic Group Life Insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year. The following voluntary benefits are available to full-time employees: Supplemental Life, AD&D Insurance, Cancer Insurance and Long-Term Disability


Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the TMRS. TMRS is a qualified tax-deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides 2-to-1 matching contributions.


Other benefits include Social Security, Tax Saver Program (Section 125 Flexible Spending Account), Deferred Compensation Plans, Direct Deposit, Paid Holidays, Paid Vacation, Sick Leave and Personal Leave.
