Faculty position in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering seeks applicants a tenure-track/tenuredfaculty positions. While all candidates will be considered, preference will be given to candidates with research and teachinginterests in Soft Matter or Systems/Data Science/ArtificialIntelligence relevant to chemical and biomolecular engineering will be considered.

Candidates in these areas will contribute to the Department ofChemical andBiomolecular Engineering and Johns Hopkins Universitycommunity and mission to educate tomorrow’s leaders in ChemBE andpioneer technological advancements to address critical globalchallenges in energy, materials design, and precision medicine, tobuild a stronger, cleaner, and healthier future.

Candidates in Soft Matter will perform original research at theintersection of a broad class of materials systems spanningcolloids, polymers, surfactants, and granular species in syntheticand/or biological materials. Possible efforts can include, but arenot limited to, experimental, computational, theoretical,machine-learning, and/or data science tools in applicationsinvolving energy, environmental, and biomedical technologies.

Candidates in the Systems/Data Science/Artificial Intelligence areawill perform original research at the interface between chemicalengineering modeling/scientific computation and modern Data Scienceand Machine Learning. Possible efforts include but are not limitedto modern design and optimization (e.g. in the role of AI in thetransition from automated to autonomous process operations).Creative uses of DSAI in materials/chemicals/process discovery, ortowards novel computational approaches to atomistic simulations orbiological systems modeling are of direct interest.

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is highlycollaborative with an established track record of nationalleadership and developing new disciplines within chemical andbiomolecular engineering. The Department has large, vibranteducational programs at the undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D.levels as well as post-doctoral level.

This past year, Johns Hopkins announced a major new investment indata science and the exploration of artificial intelligence thatwill be included in a new data science and translation institute, anew state-of-the-art facility and recruitment of 110 new facultyover the next five years. The institute will bring togetherworld-class experts in artificial intelligence, machine learning,applied mathematics, computer engineering, and computer science tofuel data-driven discovery in support of research activities acrossthe institution including within the Chemical and BiomolecularEngineering department.

In addition to its role in this initiative, the department is aleader in other major research centers and institutes at JohnsHopkins, including the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute(ROSEI), the Institute for Nanobiotechnology (INBT), the AdvancedMammalian Biomanufacturing Innovation Center (AMBIC), InternationalBiomanufacturing Network (IBIoNe) MINDS (Mathematical Institute forDataScience), the Maryland Area Research Computing Center (MARCC),the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI). Faculty alsocollaborate frequently with scholars in the Johns Hopkins School ofMedicine, Applied Physics Laboratory, Bloomberg School of PublicHealth, and the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in chemical and biomolecularengineering or a related field, a track record of outstandingresearch, and a commitment to excellence in education and studentmentoring. The expected base pay range for this position is$150,000-$200,000.

The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based onfaculty rank and years in rank. This salary range does not includeall components of the WSE/ChemBE faculty compensation program orpay from participation in WSE/ChemBE incentive compensationprograms. Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selectedcandidate may vary from the salary range stated herein. For moreinformation, please contact the hiring department.

Vaccine Physical Requirements
