Job summary

Hy-Vee in Urbandale, IA is looking for a friendly Checker who will be the last face customers see at checkout. You’ll operate the register, assist shoppers, and help ensure every visit ends on a great note by delivering prompt, accurate service.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers with a smile and provide prompt, friendly service
• Operate the cash register and process all payment types (cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, WIC, food stamps)
• Count back change, issue receipts, and handle refunds or credits as needed
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines (WIC, food stamps, tobacco, liquor, lottery)
• Assist with bags, drive-up and carry-out service, and stock rotation as needed
• Stay knowledgeable of item look-up numbers, department numbers, and weekly ad items
• Keep shelves clean, face merchandise, and maintain correct shelf tags
• Keep the register area organized, report cash discrepancies, and verify balances
• Communicate clearly via intercom/phone and assist customers in finding items or answering questions

What You’ll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here’s what you can expect:

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and going out of your way to make every visit a great one
• Operate the cash register accurately, scanning product and processing all payment types including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions
• Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC, food stamps, and the sale of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets
• Place merchandise in bags or boxes, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service
• Stay knowledgeable of item look-up numbers, department numbers, item features, and weekly ad price changes and sale items
• Stock, face, and rotate merchandise, clean shelves, understand shelf tags, and take customers to items when requested
• Keep the register area clean, ensure adequate supplies are available, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawer
• Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable
• Communicate clearly on the intercom or telephone and answer customer questions, following up with appropriate personnel as needed]}??
