Position Purpose

The Surgical Services Charge Nurse, under the direction of the Surgical Services Director, is responsible for ensuring the effective patient flow throughout all surgical services and promoting evidence-based practices. The role focuses on the education and professional development of staff while overseeing patient care and coordinating with other departments within the hospital surgical setting in accordance with the facility’s standards.

Position Purpose

The Surgical Services Charge Nurse, under the direction of the Surgical Services Director, is responsible for ensuring the effective patient flow throughout all surgical services and promoting evidence-based practices. The role focuses on the education and professional development of staff while overseeing patient care and coordinating with other departments within the hospital surgical setting in accordance with the facility’s standards.

Essential Functions

The following are critical functions of this position, for which the Charge Nurse is accountable. These duties may be subject to reasonable accommodations to support individuals with disabilities:

  • Coordinate Patient Care: Utilizes the nursing process and leadership skills to organize and coordinate patient care services across surgical services during the designated shift.
  • Ensure Patient Safety: Ensures patient care is appropriate to the age and developmental level of each patient served, ensuring safety and quality of care.
  • Communication Management: Facilitates clear and efficient communication between Day Surgery, Operating Room (OR), PACU, and GI staff.
  • Facility and Equipment Oversight: Supervises the OR suite and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational integrity.
  • Staff Assessment and Collaboration: Assesses staffing needs, collaborating with the Staffing Coordinator, Nurse Director, and House Supervisor to meet the needs of patients.
  • Activity Coordination: Coordinates activities, including collaboration with physicians and consulting with other nursing staff and departments.
  • Delegation of Duties: Utilizes knowledge of staff responsibilities to delegate tasks according to their skills, training, and availability.
  • Staff Education and Mentorship: Provides formal and informal education, mentorship, preceptor programs, and in-service training to staff and students.
  • Performance Monitoring: Observes and evaluates the performance of nursing personnel and provides feedback to the Surgical Services Director.
  • Quality Improvement: Implements corrective measures to address inadequacies in patient care quality and ensures continuous improvement.
  • Equipment Monitoring: Regularly checks equipment to ensure it is functioning properly and ready for use.
  • Patient Care Monitoring: Monitors the quality of patient care delivered by staff, ensuring it aligns with established protocols and standards.
  • Other Duties as Assigned: Completes additional tasks as directed to support the hospital’s mission and vision.

Other Essential Functions

  • Required Education and Competency: Complete all assigned education, competencies, and training within deadlines.
  • Work Attendance: Regular attendance is required, ensuring adherence to work schedules and participation in department meetings.
  • Safety Culture: Promote and adhere to safety guidelines, reporting incidents within the established timeframe.
  • Compliance: Abide by the hospital's Code of Conduct, Mission, Vision, Department Policies, and relevant state and federal laws (e.g., OSHA, HIPAA, CMS).
  • Customer Service: Provide excellent internal and external customer service, demonstrating professionalism, teamwork, and a positive attitude.

  • Supervision: Oversees all staff in surgical services, addressing any concerns or issues and reporting them to the Surgical Services Director.
  • Population Served: Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Required:
    • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
    • Registered Nurse licensed in Texas.
    • Minimum of 2 years of acute care experience.
    • BLS (CPR) certification.
    • PALS Certification within 6 months of hire or transfer.
    • ACLS certification within 6 months of hire or transfer.
    • COVID vaccination required or approval for exemption.
  • Preferred:
    • Strong background in perioperative services and a broad range of surgical experience.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with staff, patients, and physicians.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in word processing, table organization, and Excel document management.

  • Lifting/Carrying: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and carry up to 25 lbs. frequently.

  • Typically works indoors in well-ventilated, air-conditioned areas.
  • Hazardous Exposures: Physical (sharps), Chemical (germicides), Biological (bloodborne and airborne pathogens), and Body Fluids.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Required for standard and transmission-based precautions.
