Job summary

Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ, seeks a compassionate Chaplain to provide spiritual counseling and existential care to patients, families, and staff. You will collaborate with the healthcare team to advocate for spiritual needs and integrate holistic care.

Responsibilities

  • Advocate for patient rights regarding spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial values.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and rounds.
  • Educate patients and families about spiritual resources, ethics, and organ donation.

Job description

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Chaplain, you will serve as a vital spiritual leader and compassionate caregiver within our hospital community, providing essential spiritual counseling and support to patients, families, and staff.

Every day, you will provide direct spiritual, religious, and existential care, offering compassionate presence, support, and appropriate rituals to patients, families, and staff, especially during times of crisis or grief. You will collaborate with the healthcare team to advocate for spiritual needs and integrate holistic care, ensuring respect for diverse beliefs.

To be successful in this role, you must be a highly compassionate individual, comfortable and skilled in engaging with people who may be emotional, panicked, stressed, or in pain. You'll need the proven ability to provide empathetic care, adapt to diverse spiritual needs, and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Daily Operations and Procedures:
  • Provides pastoral care, to patients and families in a timely manner and serves as a professional spiritual care resource
  • Maintains accurate documentation in patient charts regarding spiritual care interventions, plans, and outcomes
  • Advocates for patient rights in regard to spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial values and how they impact a patient and their support system response to their care
  • Supports an interdisciplinary approach to pastoral care by participating in team meetings and rounds
  • Provides education to patients and families about spiritual resources, advance directives, organ and tissue donation, ethics, and other spiritual issues that may arise
Job Requirements
Required
  • Masters Degree in Theology, Pastoral Care/Counseling or recognized by applicant’s faith group
  • Clinical Pastoral Education: 4 units of CPE (1600 hours) in an accredited ACPE hospital center
  • Board Certified Chaplain APC, within 24 - months of hire
Preferred
  • One (1)+ years of chaplaincy experience in a hospital or healthcare setting
