Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW: A Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) assists the Engineering, Production, and Quality departments to plan and evaluate weldment quality per customer and industry code requirements. The CWI directs and leads weld quality improvement initiatives and resolves issues related to welding procedures and requirements. Additionally, the CWI maintains the certified weld program by testing and certifying welding employees per customer and industry standards.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Maintain the certified welding program, including weld testing and evaluation.
  • Ensure compliance with all certifications and testing required by customers (WPS, PQR, WPQR) and maintain all related records.
  • Interpret and implement technical documentation such as code books, specifications, lab reports, and rejection/quality reports.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Production, and Quality teams to ensure proper weld requirements and procedures are followed.
  • Complete and approve welding setup sheets.
  • Investigate and propose new welding equipment or processes to enhance weld quality or efficiency.
  • Assist in resolving weld-related failures, reduce customer rejections, and minimize rework by addressing internal leak issues.
  • Develop tooling or techniques to improve production efficiency and reduce non-welding labor.
  • Use measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, and weld gauges to verify weld dimensions and sign off on job start-up.
  • Communicate with customers and vendors regarding welding and weld quality issues via phone, email, or in-person meetings.
  • Track and report weld defects, communicating issues to relevant areas.
  • Train and evaluate production welders, maintaining welder qualification records.
  • Perform all other assigned projects and tasks.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) certification; D1.1 codebook preferred.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) welding processes.
  • Knowledge of welding symbols and symbology.
  • Proficiency in using weld measurement equipment (calipers, feeler gauges, fillet gauges, bridge-cam gauges).
  • Understanding of AWS and ASME code documentation.
