Job summary

The Connecticut Humane Society is seeking a CERTIFIED Veterinary Technician to join the Waterford location. The ideal candidate has shelter or veterinary clinic experience and is capable of handling surgical cases and patient care.

  • Education: Associate’s Degree in animal science or related field.
  • Experience: 1–3 years if certified; 3–5 years if not certified with ability to become certified within 6–12 months.
  • Must have worked as a vet tech in a clinic or shelter with surgery experience.
  • Ability to perform physically strenuous activities (lifting up to 40 lbs, standing, bending, cleaning, walking animals).
  • Prior experience with animal restraint and with electronic medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in quality medical and surgical care of animals, including routine preventative care, meds, lab tests, and anesthesia monitoring.
  • Work mainly in Waterford Shelter medical department; may work at other sites.
  • Support surgical rotation; exposure to surgery skills.
  • Maintain accurate electronic medical records.
  • Handle multiple priorities in a busy environment; work both independently and as part of a team.

Introduction

Have you always wanted to help animals? If so, the Connecticut Humane Society has the perfect job for you. We are looking for a CERTIFIED Veterinary Technician to join the team at our Waterford location. Applicants for this key position must have prior experience working in a shelter or veterinary clinic.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the provision of quality medical and surgical care of animals, including performing routine preventative care, administering medications, assessing patient progress, running basic laboratory tests, surgical prep and post‑op care, induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients, answering adopters' and fosters' questions about medical conditions and home care, and performing end‑of‑life care when necessary.
  • Work primarily in the Waterford Shelter medical department but may occasionally work at other locations (Wilton, Newington, Fox Memorial Clinic).
  • Support surgical rotation; surgery skills required (cycle through surgical rotation).
  • Maintain accurate electronic medical records.
  • Handle multiple priorities and navigate a busy environment.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to ensure timely, quality medical care for all animals.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: Associate’s Degree in animal science or related field.
  • Experience: 1–3 years if certified. 3–5 years if not certified, with ability to become certified within 6–12 months.
  • Must have worked as a vet tech in a clinic or shelter setting with surgery experience. (Not a vet assistant.)
  • Ability to perform physically strenuous activities: lifting moderate to heavy weights (up to 40 lbs.), standing/bending, pushing brooms/mops, walking and controlling dogs/cats, using cleaning solutions, and sitting at a desk for long periods.
  • Prior experience with animal restraint.
  • Proficiency with computers and online medical records.
Preferred Qualities
  • Certification: CVT or LVT
  • Bachelor’s Degree

Full‑time position with benefits eligible. Five days per week schedule: Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm. One weekend day.
